The River Forest Armory was built in 1892 and served as a center for ammunition storage, manufacturing, and distribution. The armory was located on the west side of town near the present-day intersection of State Route 8 and Illinois Avenue. It was one of the largest arsenals in Illinois at its time. In 1907, the armory was purchased by the Chicago Armour Company and became known as the Chicago Armour & Steel Company. In 1913, it merged with Bethlehem Steel Corporation to form American Arms Manufacturing Company. In 1936, American Arms Manufacturing company merged with United States Ordnance Corporation to become United States Military Ammunition Corporation. In 1945, military ammunition production ended at USMAC and all assets were sold to The Winchester Repeating Arms Company.
River Forest, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. River Forest was founded in 1847 by brothers John and Isaac Newton as a sawmill village on the banks of the Chicago River. The village grew rapidly due to its location downstream from downtown Chicago and its natural resources: timber, coal and water power. In 1865, River Forest became a city and lost its rural character; however, it retained many of its cultural attractions including the Newton Theatre and Playhouse (now known as Lincoln Park), which opened in 1892 and remains one of the most significant theaters in Chicagoland. The riverfront amusement park called Monmouth Park was built on land that once belonged to River Forest. In 1955–56, River Forest turned over ownership of Monmouth Park to the City of Chicago for use as public open space. Today, Monmouth Park features a large playground with an ice rink, two generally artificial lakes filled with boats or rafts for swimming/kayaking/canoeing/, several tennis courts (including two Babe Ruth courts), a disc golf course (the first in Chicagoland), basketball diamonds (including one used by NCAA men’s college basketball teams), children’s play areas including four-player swings sets and slide galleries spanning three stories tall; as well as an impressive collection of art deco architecture dating back to 1922 when River Forest was still part of Fort Dearborn Township
