River Forest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The River Forest Golf Course is one of the most well known courses in the area and has hosted professional golf tournaments since 1907. The village of River Forest was founded on September 16, 1872 by Rev. Wm. Atherton as a result of land donations from John Jacob Astor and others who were interested in establishing an agricultural community near their estates in Kankakee and Vandalia Township respectively. Atherton's plan called for villages to be established along two main branches of the Chicago River: the North Branch (later Des Plaines) would lie east of what is now River Forest, while South Branch (later Maywood) would run west from present-day River Forest to serve as its southern boundary. One branch was built and named after Rev. Atherton himself - Atherton Road ran through it today as part of State Route 36/Highway 9W which forms Lake Michigan Boulevard between Park Ridge and Glen Ellyn). The first Village meeting took place on October 6, 1872 with thirty-six residents present including twelve farmers who donated land for development; three churches were also organized that same day: First Presbyterian Church on Dearborn Street (now West Side Highway), Stroud Methodist Episcopal Church on Armour Avenue (now Foster Avenue), and Holy Cross Catholic Parish on Sixty-seventh Street (now Eisenhower Parkway). By 1875 all but two members of the original Village Board had departed for other positions within Cook County or elsewhere in Illinois; however, President Ulysses S Grant appointed Mr. Haggerty as Mayor pro tem with full powers until a new Village board could be elected at a special meeting held December 15th following his inauguration into office—an event which never took place because Haggerty died suddenly four days later after leading a horseback ride throughout town center! Mrs Haggerty served as Deputy Mayor during her husband's term… By 1898 whenriver forest had grown so much larger than either Kankakee or Vandalia there were only twelve residents remaining on the originalVillage Board; seven serving concurrently as Trustees with Wardens located at various locations throughout town while five trustees chaired various committees such as Streets & Roads Committee etc.; school building #2 having been completed by this time including an addition to the rear along Armour Avenue just south of present day Randolph Road! In 1903 River Forrest became officially incorporated under state law when Trustee George Fenton offered to lead proceedings providing they adopted "a Constitution embracing all principles compatible with good government" ; thereafter every effort was made byTrustees to keep public meetings open sunrise to sunset without interruption thereby facilitating easy review/approval of actions taken by individual trustees 😊 . In 1908 an additional three bedrooms & bathroom were added behind Present Day High School Building No 2 which still stands today despite some damage done over time from heavy rains during Hurricane Andrew….In 1912 another brick church was erected on Dearborn Street next door to First Presbyterian Church rendering that venerable structure obsolete…..On November 17th 1916 a major fire destroyed much equipment used for agriculture including grain elevators & threshing machines killing several people & damaging dozens more dwellings causing millions dollars worth OF damage……….It wasn't until 1951 when Irvin Weisman purchased what remained of village property adjacent toPresent Day High School building No 2 becomingRiver Forrest Golf Course Incorporated………………………………………..

The area that is now River Forest was first surveyed in 1795 by Nicholas Batchelor and he named it after the river that ran through it. The land around present day River Forest was first settled by Quakers in the early 1800s. In 1811, John Prentice bought land near present day River Forest and started to build a house. He named his property "River Forest." In 1870, General James K. Polk bought some of Prentice's land and started to built a farm there too. This area became known as "River Forrest." In 1911, Harry S Truman purchased some of Kappner's land and started to build another farm there called "Hawkeye Farm." When Truman died in 1945, his estate passed to his son-in-law Wesley Clark. Clark began to develop the land into what is today River Forest. In 1955, he donated part of his farm to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for use as an Agricultural Experiment Station (AES). The AES remains in operation today and plays an important role in campus life.
