Richton Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,824 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Kane County Community College and the DuPage County Correctional Facility. Richton Park was platted in 1871 by John H. Richardson as part of the Town of Northfield. The first settler to arrive in what is now Richton Park was Isaac Allred, who arrived on October 20, 1871. In 1872, Wm. Fenton bought land in what would become much of south Richton Park from James Prentice for $1,000 cash and 10 acres (4 ha). In 1874, Abraham Ortmeier purchased land east of Willard Road from Fenton for $2 per acre (0.76 ha). Ortmeier named his tract "Richton". The town's first post office opened in 1875 with Mr. Gresham as its first clerk; it closed due to low mail volume two years later and re-opened under the name "Northfield" on July 1st, 1880 with Samuel Aiken as its first postmaster . On November 15th1881 local citizens successfully petitioned the General Assembly to incorporate their town which they did on January 16th1882 when their petition received unanimous approval from both houses of the legislature . The new town charter stated that “Richton Park shall be an incorporated village” but no village form ever materialized due to lack of support from residents or business owners . In 1916 a group of Richton Park residents formed a civic club called "The Citizens" to improve public services including fire FIGHTING equipment for the then small city and approved resolutions seeking annexation into Cook County in 1917 and1920 respectively but these never materialized either because Richardsons remained heavily involved within Kane County politics In 1927 a small strip mall located just east off I-88 near present day Highway 616 opened up; this strip mall would become one of Illinois' largest shopping malls when it opened up adjacent businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Macy's Inc., Kmart Corporation etc.. While developing this area some developers decided that they wanted more out of their properties so they started building high rises such as One Craig Drive which stands today still unused although once housing over 100 apartments……….In 1992 DuPage Counties Landowners Association Incorporated erected a holiday tree on top of One Craig Drive which still remains standing today
