Richton Park is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first scopes were built in Richton Park in 1881 by American astronomer George Washington Woodward and his assistant J.B.Saunders. The town's first school was built on a bluff overlooking the village and used to provide instruction to residents who then would take their telescopes up onto the bluff to view the stars. Both early Richton Park residents and astronomers continue to make an impact on astronomy through research and education today. In 1981, Drs John Dvorak and Allan Sandusky donated a 10-inch (25 cm) Dobsonian telescope called "Nova" to be used at Jesse Owens High School which has been instrumental in helping promote astronomy within the community as well as educating students about it.

In 1969, Richton Park became home to the first high school ever built in Cook County. It currently has three schools: one elementary (K-8), one middle (9-12), and one high school (13-18). Over time, Richton Park has developed several successful educational institutions that continue to provide quality education for residents today: The village's commercial district is composed of four blocks - Center St., Walnut St., Cicero Ave., and Ewing Ave.— which contain more than 100 businesses including convenience stores, restaurants, banks, post offices and health clinics. Many of these businesses are located on large open areas facing onto rolling farmland with plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation such as hunting or fishing; some have ponds outdoors for swimming as well as tennis courts and playgrounds for children. There are also several shopping centers within easy walking distance including Village Square Shopping Center which features several banks and retail outlets as well as movie theaters; followed by smaller complexes such as Midtown mall (close to I-88) containing a variety of anchor stores along with two theme parks - Discoveryland amusement park featuring rides like an IMAX theater and Six Flags Great America - both family Theme Parks with over 20 attractions each making this an excellent place to visit during summertime when there are no major tourist attractions close at hand
Richton Park is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. On July 1, 1837, Richton Park became an independent town after a vote by the village board. The first post office in Richton Park was established on December 12, 1837. In 1861, Richton Park annexed part of neighboring Prattsville and became one municipality with a total population of 54 people. On February 14, 1893, the portion of Richton Park east of State Street was sold to Matteson Township for $1 million and merged into that township. In 2000–2001, local voters passed a ballot measure to annex portions of neighboring North Kankakee Township along with Orland Hills and Villa Grove to form a new city called "Richton City". That proposal failed to receive enough signatures to make it onto the November 3rd election ballot as required by law.
