Richton Park is a city in northwest Illinois, United States. The population was 24,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Richton Park was George Richards who arrived on October 5, 1814, with his family from Newburyport, Massachusetts. Richards erected a log cabin on the now-demolished lot that still stands near the intersection of South Damen and West Devon Streets. In 1825, he married Sarah Ladd and together they founded what would become Richardsville ancestry museum and research center adjacent to their home on North Main Street. In 1830 John Wickersham platted what would become Richton Park as two separate towns – one for men only and one for women – but both were merged into Richton Park on February 17, 1836 when it became an incorporated town under the name of "RICHTON PARK". At its peak during World War II (1939-1945), Richton Park had a population of over 50,000 people living in over 350 buildings including 2 hospitals and 3 schools. Today there are just over 12000 residents living in just 245 buildings including 2 hospitals and 1 school district which offers education through pre-Kindergarten through twelveth grade levels.

Richton Park was founded in 1837 by a group of wealthy Illinois farmers. The area that is now Richton Park was surveyed and named after General David Richards, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The town was first built on the edge of a small swamp, but this changed when a canal was built through the area and rich limestone became available for building. In 1848, Richton Park incorporated as a city. By 1870, it had reached its present size and included land around the then rural village of Richtonville. The city annexed additional territory from various villages until it had an area of 111 square miles (291 km2). In 1898, Richton Park became one of the cities in Cook County, Illinois.
