Richton Park is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,988 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was platted in 1872 by John Richton and his wife Julia Richardson as a tiny community on the South Side of Chicago. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location near railroad tracks and as a result of its position on land that had been donated by John Richton's father-in-law, Abraham Lincoln Richardson. In 1909, Richton Park became one of twenty villages consolidated into the city of Chicago; it retains its own government and school system today. In 1924, money was raised to build a local library which opened in 1927 followed by a high school in 1929. In 1945, an industrial park was developed near the village limits; this led to rapid growth for the town and eventually led to its annexation into Kane County in 1951. Today, Richton Park has strong ties with agriculture and manufacturing dating back to when it was home to one of Kane County's first farmers' markets; this market continued until 1978 when it moved to nearby Downers Grove. The town also maintains close ties with neighboring Willmottville through shared agricultural produce sales and events such as rodeo weekends each fall.

On July 6, 1776, George Washington fired a cannonball into a military target from HMS "HMS Eagle" during a naval battle between American and British warships near Charleston Harbor. This event became known as the Battle of Monmouth Court House.
Richton Park is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was first settled as a small farming village in 1854 by Irish immigrants who named it Richton after their estates near Richmond Hill in England. A post office was established there on March 16, 1856, and the name changed to Richton Park on October 15, 1861. The railroad reached town from Joliet on December 12, 1871; and when the main line crossed the river near present-day Racine on February 14, 1872, Richton Park became an incorporated town. The first school in Richton Park opened in November 1860 with three teachers and fifty students. By 1870 there were five schools with 1,500 students; ten churches; and two sawmills. In 1865–1866 a large factory was built at what is now North Glencorse Road for Jethro Gibbs & Sons lumber merchants; it employed 300 people (the last time this number appears on local records). Production stopped during World War II because of problems with firewood demand within the city limits of Chicago; however, remnants of the plant can still be seen today at 5th Street and Racine Avenue. The factory closed its doors permanently in 1966 but some remnant parts remain extant as part of what is now called "Gibbs' Factory Museum." In 1916 Richton Park residents voted to annex portions of Evanston Township due to financial difficulties caused by agricultural production costs associated with heavy immigration from Hungary during that year's WWI); Evanston Township annexation made full use of all township resources available to Richton Park citizens through special taxes levied upon these annexed areas such as real estate values exceeding $1 million per acre (this taxation continued until 1980). Prior to annexation efforts by both townships services were provided by separate constables which continue up until this day including streetlights (Richtontown), water supply (Richtontown), garbage collection (Evanston) & trash removal (Richtontown).
