It became home to the first gun swivel in 1867 when an unskilled labourer named John Tisdale bought a swivel from a Swiss gunsmith. Richton Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was organized on February 14, 1892 as a result of the merger of two small villages, Richton and Arlington Heights. On November 2, 1905, it merged with neighbouring Arlington Heights to form a new city called Chicago. The name change came about because Richton Park was located in then-northwest Cook County and Arlington Heights was located in then-southwest Cook County. Richton Park is bordered by Waukegan to the east; Logan Square to the south; Maywood to the west; Racine to the northwest and Garytoon to the north. According to the 2010 US Census report:

Richton Park is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 41,916 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Cook County after Chicago. Richton Park is also one of two cities in Cook County that have a majority African American population (the other being Glenview). The first settler in what would become Richton Park was John Richards who arrived on May 15, 1814. Richards named his land "Richmond" after his father-in-law and namesake George Richmond of Virginia. A post office calledRichmond was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1901. In 1837, James Gillespie purchased 640 acres of land southeast of present day Richton Park from John Richards for $1 million dollars. This large tract included much of what later became the City of Richton Park as well as surrounding neighborhoods including Arlington Heights to the south and Northwest Side to the north and east. Gillespie's purchase marked the beginning of an important period for Richton Park as he developed this land into one of its most influential businesses and political strongholds during the late 19th century. In 1863, Ulysses S Grant visited Richardson park while on his way to Gettysburg where he delivered a speech before Confederate forces assembled there that summer commemorating Union victory over Confederate General Robert E Lee. After this visit, Richardson park became known as Grant's favorite spot in Illinois due to its serene setting within easy walking distance from downtown Chicago with access to many fine trails providing lovely views throughout much of Chicagoland . In addition to hosting numerous public events throughout its history such as world wars I & II; inaugurations; presidential visits by Grover Cleveland (1893); Franklin D Roosevelt (1930), Harry Truman (1945), Lyndon Johnson (1963) among others; Richardson park has also been home to numerous famous athletes including Davy Crockett Jr., Jesse Owens, Sammy Baugh and Muhammad Ali who all played some part at some point while living or playing ball hereabouts.. Richton Park was founded in 1847 by John C. Richter and his wife, Anna. The city was named after the rich land that lay between Chicago and its twin towns of Evanston and Libertyville. In 1865, the Richters donated a tract of land to the Illiniwek Mennonite Brethren Church for their Soldiers' Home. The home served as a hospital until 1929 when it was converted into an apartment complex.
