Richton Park has been home to many notable people over the years including Edward Munch (1859-1940), banker Julius Rosenwald (1892-1978), entrepreneur Harry Belafonte (1907-1997), and actor Neil Patrick Harris (b. 1948). The city also bestowed upon Richton Park its own annual award—theNeil Patrick Harris Award for Excellence in Arts and Culture—in 2006.
Richton Park was founded in 1849 as a small farming community on the banks of the Chicago River. The area today includes Richton Park, Elmhurst, and Hinsdale suburbs. In the early 1900s, Richton Park became home to one of Illinois' largest meatpacking plants. The plant closed in the 1970s, but its legacy lives on in nearby Cicero Township's production of pork products.
