The town was platted in 1847 by Nicholas Richton and his brother Silas Richardson. It was named for John Richards, an early settler there. The first post office in Richton Park was established on October 20, 1847. The first store in the town opened on November 11 of that year. In 1853, the village of Richton Park waschartered with a vote by its citizens to become independent from Richton Park Township. On January 1, 1905, the two towns merged into one municipality under the name "Richton Park." In 1916, during World War I, Richton Park supplied arms and munitions to various U.S.-sponsored organizations including American Legion posts throughout Illinois and Wisconsin (Operation Crossroads). At least three homes were destroyed or damaged as a result of shelling from German artillery during the war; however no one was ever charged with any wrongdoing as a result of this activity. Held every Fourth Saturday in May since 1951 by local school board members and their guests at the home of Mrs. Esther Kappes (former Superintendent), this event is now known as "The Plaza Parade".
