Richton Park is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Richton Park community began to form in 1868 when three families bought 1,000 acres (40 hectares) of land east of present-day Richton Park on the border of Cook and DuPage Counties. The town was named after George Richards, one of the original settlers and treasurer of the village of Rockford. In 1872, a post office was established in Richton Park with Wm. Haggerty as first postmaster and Hester Bemis as second postmaster. In 1879, the Chicago & Northwestern Railway built a line from Evanston to Quincy via Richton Park and other towns in Cook County. In 1888, the cityRailroad constructed a line from downtown Chicago to their eastern terminus at Elmhurst through Richton Park. This change created an important transportation link between Richtontown and Chicago while also addingresidential development within town limits. In 1912, it was announced that wealthy businessman John Daley would build his family's first skyscraper in Chicagos West Side neighborhood on State Street just north of Midway Airport – becoming one of many newcomers to what became known as "the North Side." Daley donated $200 million for construction on two towers that remain standing today: One broadcasting live over Blackhawks hockey games from 1961 until 1985; and one now used by First National Bank as their new headquarters building following its acquisition by Wells Fargo in 2005. Richton Park was a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. It was located on the border of the town of Wheaton and Richton Park, and it lay north ofNormal. The population was 1,036 at the 2000 census. The first settler in Richton Park was John Richards who built a cabin on a hill near what is now its central square. A post office was established in 1827, and by 1830 there were nine families living in Richton Park. In 1834, David Kirkland purchased land east of Richton Park from John Richards for $240 cash. He built a farm named Kirkland's Grove that he used as his home and business until his death in 1865. His widow continued to live there until her death in 1893.
Richton Park was founded in 1834 by a group of Illinois farmers, led by John Richardson. The village grew rapidly, and by the early 1840s it had a population of around 350 people. In 1847, the town was renamed Richton after its founder, and it grew even more rapidly; within 10 years it had reached 1,000 people. By 1860, however, Richton Park had become an important agricultural center due to its fertile land and good irrigation systems. It remained an important community until the late 19th century.
