Richton Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,813 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1871 by General George H. Richardson and his father-in-law, Colonel John M. Richardson. At its peak it had a population of 12,000. The name comes from Rich Township which it included at that time and for many years ran together with nearby Plainfield Township as one municipality. In 1881, when both townships were merged into one, their respective names were changed to Richton Park and Plainfield Park respectively. According to the 2010 census data, the racial makeup of Richton Park is 79% white (non-Hispanic), 15% black or African American (non-Caucasian), 2% Native American/Alaskan Native, 1% Asian Pacific Islander (non-Hispanic), 3% other races (non-Caucasian). As of the census date 2009 there are also 6 people who identify themselves as Latino or SpanishAmerican

Richton Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 29,898 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Cook County after Chicago. The community of Richton Park was founded by John Richardson in 1846 as a small village on the west side of Rock Island Lake. In 1857, it became a town when the original Township of Richton and portion of its east line were combined to form another township, Winnetka. In 1916, the townships were divided into two districts and Richton Park was created within District 2. It became an independent municipality on January 1, 2009. In 1865, John Richardson donated land to build what would become Richton Park State School just east of his home on what is now Vienna Road. The school opened in 1868 and remains one of the most popular public schools in Illinois today with more than 13 million students having attended it since its establishment. Today's stately Richardsonsville home (now part of the City limits) once served as an office for teachers during teacher's strikes that occurred intermittently throughout early 20th century Illinois; these days only remnants remain from that era! In 1925-1926, then-Mayor Edward Jaffe led efforts to create a park system surrounding downtown Chicago which includedRichmond Heights Recreation Area located adjacent to Richmond Avenue between Randolph Street and Wabash Avenueand Prospect Heights Recreation Area located adjacent to Prospect Avenue between West 148th Street and Pulaski Street – all within current Limits of Chicago). Many people believe that this effort may have been instrumental in improving bike riding – sawdust still covers many sections of original playground equipment from those early days!
