In 1907 it merged with Malvern Township to form the new village of Richton Park. In 1925, Richton Park incorporated as a city and changed its name to Chicago. The community was first settled by German immigrants who came to the area as part of the Great Lakes Settlement. In 1853, the Richton Park post office was opened and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The community began to grow rapidly during World War I when a large munitions plant was built there. After the war, Richton Park became a center for agricultural production and saw rapid growth throughout the 1920s and 1930s. However, during World War II, Richton Park declined because of its proximity to military bases and manufacturing plants. Despite this decline, however, Richton Park remains a small town with strong cultural memories that have helped make it one of Illinois’ most popular tourist destinations.
