Richton Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Airguns have been an important part of the community for many years and Richton Park has one of the highest concentration rates of airguns in Illinois. The first airgun shooting galleries were established in Richton Park by members of the local Rifle Club in 1922. From then until about 1930 there was only shotgun shooting as the primary form of airgun practice here in Richton Park. Rifle Association members continued to use shotguns for target shooting through 1928 when they switched to airguns which became more popular among them because they could be reloaded quickly and had a longer range than shotguns. In 1932 rifle club member John Sprague opened his own gun shop near State Street selling both rifles and pistols using high-quality parts made by commercial manufacturers including Winchester, Ruger, Smith & Wesson and Colt handguns which he imported from Connecticut USA. Sprague's shop soon became known as "The Gun Shop" and began providing instruction on how to shoot firearms using airguns as well as repair/stenciling/paintball guns with real ammunition supplies made by Remington Arms Company under license from John Moses Browning Company Ltd.. In 1935 Sprague married Esther Henneman who also worked at The Gun Shop while he operated it full-time; together they ran The Gun Shop until Esther's death in 1984. Sprague's successors at The Gun Shop were Jim Morrison (1946-1994), Don Freeman (1945-1999) and Bill Dyer (1948-2018). All three men started out working long hours but gradually increased their hours over time until eventually becoming majority owners/managers with limited liability corporation 'TheGunShop LTD'. The area has been called "the South Side of Chicago" because it has a large percentage of African Americans. The site that would become Richton Park was first settled by Germans in 1847. In 1872, rich farmers named John Cushman and George Stephenson donated land to establish the town of Richton Park on the north bank of the Calumet River near what is now North Riverside Drive. The name was chosen because it sounded like an English word meaning "a field full of corn". Richton Park grew rapidly from its incorporation as a town in 1882 until World War I when it lost much of its population due to military service or relocation. By 1920, however, it had recovered sufficiently to be renamed Richton after Arthur Sperry Richardson, one of America's pioneer capitalists and entrepreneurs who had made his mark on American industry through his ownership of The Chicago Times Company (later Tribune Newspapers). During World War II many businesses closed due to rationing but they reopened later when war production resumed. After being hit hard by recession in 2008–2009 following Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy and subsequent global financial crisis,Richton Park experienced growth beginning in earnest during the Great Recession with new development coming online such as Sears Holdings' Sears Tower complex whichopened in 2011 followed by KFC's headquarters complex which openedin 2013 In 2016 McDonalds moved their corporate headquarters from Arrington Heights into downtown Richtown after years having been based out of suburban Oak Lawn IL since 1984

The first settlers in Richton Park were Germans who arrived in 1837. Many of these settlers established farms and businesses around what is now the Old Dutch Church Cemetery. By 1860, more than eighty families had settled in Richton Park. In 1871, they erected a schoolhouse and began to build a church which was dedicated in 1876. The rich soil and Railroads made farming possible and by 1920, much of the center of town had been developed into upscale homes. In 1907, Richton Park became one of ninety-six townships within Cook County when it was created from parts of Hinsdale Township and Mayfair Township along with other smaller townships such as Mount Prospect (now Westmont), Arlington Heights, Berwyn and Fullerton. At that time there were only 3,500 residents in Richton Park township alone; today its population exceeds 10,000 residents! One significant event occurred during World War II when many German citizens living near Englewood were rounded up and taken to camps near Joliet for internment or “procession” because their property had been seized by the government for military use during wartime purposes – this also happened to some Italians living nearby as well! It wasn’t until 1949 that all land withinRichton Park Township was annexed into Cook County; however most continue to call themselves “Richton Parkites” today! Today many people still live close to their farmssteads while others have moved into larger communities across downtownChicago or outside of town altogether!
