They founded a small village on the banks of the Des Plaines River and named it after their home region, Rennes-le-Château (now Tours). In 1814, they sold their land to General James K. However, by 1920 most of the factories had closed or been converted into housing developments. In 1970, local residents gathered together to form an organization called "Rantoul Restoration Association" to try to revive the community's former glory. They hired a consultant to develop a plan for restoring buildings and neighborhood infrastructure including street cleaning, beautification, planting trees and flowers, widening sidewalks and adding new public amenities such as playgrounds and soccer fields. The association achieved some success with repairs that were made to several important buildings such as old mill building No. 1 (now known as "The Old Post Office"), but overall there was little impact on economic development or quality of life in Rantoul until more recent times when some earnest efforts have been made by both locals and visitors alike To promote local businesses while also creating opportunities for cultural experiences within the community outsideof traditional medical procedures The Census Bureau reported that 3,612 people lived in Rantoul during 2010 which means that it has decreased over this period although it remains one of McHenry County's most populous towns
