Rantoul is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the French word "rantoul," meaning "to speak." Rantoul is located on State Route 3 and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was platted in 1857 by John A. Brown and David Hartsfield. It was named for General James Rantoul, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and been wounded at Palo Alto. The first post office was established in 1858, with John Witherspoon as its first official occupant. In 1870, the village formed a committee to purchase land for a schoolhouse and sawmill; this committee built the current schoolhouse and mills on what are now North Main Street and West Third Avenue. In 1865, when Illinois became a state, Rantoul became one of its original 106 townships; it has since grown to include portions of McHenry County as well as Cook County (including parts of downtown Chicago). At the time of its incorporation as a town, there were only six stores and two hotels in Rantoul; today's businesses include three churches (onePresbyterian), three banks (JPMorgan Chase Bank & First National Bank), four restaurants/takeout spots (three Chinese joints and one Italian restaurant), two mobile home parks, an RV dealership/campground, several homes owned by local farmers or developers/contractors/, five playgrounds/water sports areas/, two shopping malls/, thirteen singles bars/, eleven professional golf courses/, eighteen schools (), thirty-six health care facilities (), twenty-nine factories (), seventy-five farms (). Rantoul is located just south of Interstate 95 Exit 191 which leads directly to Chicago through Cook County Sheriff's Department jurisdiction; access to I-95 from neighboring states can be found eastbound on I-88 Business exit 149B leading into Illinois while westbound on I-294 exit 116 leads into Michigan

Rantoul is a small, unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The community was named for General James Rantoul, an early settler and the brother of Illinois Governor John P. Morton. The first permanent settler in what is now Rantoul was whitesmith Amos Gibbs. He built a cabin on the east bank of the Sangamon River in 1827. Other early settlers included Daniel Boone and his family, who came from Kentucky in 1799; Elijah Smith in 1827; John Sibley and his family in 1830; and Levi Coffin and his family in 1836. A post office called Rantoul was established at this location on May 9, 1837, by James Fenton. In 1840, David Byington founded a gristmill here which became one of the largest flour mills operating in Kane County during that time. In 1865-66 Jens Jenson opened a brickyard which became well-known for its bricks used for building roads and other infrastructure throughout Kane County. In 1889 the mill closed due to lack of business competition but reopened two years later as an agricultural research station run by Purdue University under Professor George Stephenson with help from local farmers (the first such station operated west of Chicago). The mill closed again after World War II but reopened as an agricultural museum late last year after being inactive for many years The population of Rantoul reached 350 people by 1910 according to census records but decreased to 150 by 1930 because of loss of jobs due to World War I and then increased poverty caused by changes brought about by industrialization. However, starting around 1960 there has been a slight increase in population until reaching current levels around 2000 or so

Rantoul is a city in and the county seat of Rantoul County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Rantoul was Nicholas Biddle in 1814. A post office called "Biddleville" was established in 1825, and remained in operation until 1872. In 1854, John Capps and his brother James laid out a town site on land that would become Rantoul. They named it after General William Tecumseh Sherman's home state of Illinois. The townsite had been vacant for years because of lack of water supply and Indian raids. When Rantoul became a city on April 15, 1893, it was one of seven new cities formed from twenty-six townships during the Edwards–Macon congressional redistricting process following the 1890 census. On October 16, 1899 local notaries public certified that incorporation papers were filed with the Sangamon County recorder's office by Captains George Wessels (of the 5th Regiment US Volunteers) and Lorenzo Vella (of Company K 2nd artillery) under the name "Rantyville". After meeting some conditions set by Sangamon County authorities including providing plumbing facilities for all citizens within two months after incorporation - including approval to erect a City Hall -Captain Wessels and Captain Vella petitioned Cook County Circuit Court Judge James J Roche to have their incorporation recognised as an official community by Cook County officials; they received an answer backdated November 3rd that stated "Cook County has no jurisdiction over this community". On December 1st Judge Roche granted recognition and ordered sixBUSINESSMEN OF THIS COMMUNITY TO INSTALL PLUMBING FACILITIES AND MAKE ALL NECESSARY MAINTENANCE DUE UPON RECEIPT OF SUCH NOTICE." This started what would be known as “The Water Works Scoop” as Businessmen from surrounding communities began coming to help install piped water service into Rantyville from nearby municipalities such as Peoria Heights (which got its water system starting up around 1900), Normal Heights (1899), Dunnellon (1901), Wheaton Heights (1903), Westmont Park (1920), Crystal Lake Heights(1924) & South Side Village(1927). It should also be noted that many businesses closed down or changed hands after World War II since there wasn't enough business potential left when war ended so much likeNormal Homes which closed down in 2003 due to low demand then Rosemount Hardware closing down due to low demand then lastly Nails And Shoes closing down because they couldn't compete with online sales etc... so basically there wasn't really much activity going on before WWII aside from small businesses
