Rantoul, Illinois is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Rantoul is located in northeastern McHenry County on the border of Cook and Kane Counties. It lies on a narrow strip of upland along the north shore of DuPage Lake and to its east lies rural Kane County. The village has a total land area of just over two square miles (6 km2). The Village was founded in 1853 as a result of an act by the General Assembly which authorized the erection of a public school in Rantoul for local children from families who could not afford private schools. In 1868, when Rantoul became an incorporated municipality it had 526 residents; today it has about 350 residents. In addition to its public schools there are three private schools: one for pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade, one for ninth through twelveth grades, and one for high school students up to sixteen years old. The Village also offers numerous services such as water and wastewater systems, parks and recreation facilities, police/fire protection, library services, business support services as well as groceries and other commercial interests within walking or biking distance from most home economics stores or restaurants in town.

Rantoul, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It forms the municipal unit of Rantoul Township. The first settler in what is now Rantoul was Abram Dibble in 1818. Abram had come from England and his family settled on a farm four miles east of present-day Rantoul on the banks of the Kankakee River. In 1826 John Bakeman arrived and built a cabin on what is now State Route 59A about two miles northeast of present-day Rantoul. In 1827 George Winn founded the village of Carthage to serve as a post office and storehouse for local farmers and traders. Carthage grew rapidly and by 1830 there were eighteen dwellings and five stores in Carthage. By 1840 there were twenty dwellings and thirteen stores in Carthage, with a population of over one hundred people. In 1847 Jacob Lakin set up shop as an express wagon driver in Carthage for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company; he became known as "Jab Jab" because he would always stop at various local watering places to restock his supplies before continuing his journey northward. Lakin's wagon stop was also known as "The Tavern". Lakin's depot served as an important center for transportation within Rantoul township until1860 when it moved to nearby Westville (now Waukegan). After that time most village activity centered around Lakin's depot or around neighboring farms near Highway 24/Upper Arlington Road which connected Rantou
