Rantoul is a small town in northern Illinois, located about 20 miles west of Chicago. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded in 1846 by James W. Rantoul and his brother-in-law, George Haughton. The first post office was established in 1847. The name came from a stream that ran through the village. In 1878, Rantoul incorporated as a Village government with a mayor and five trustees responsible for local affairs including schools and fire protection. In 1942, during World War II, the U.S. Army made an airstrip available to Rantoul residents within easy reach of Chicago airfields for training purposes; this became known as "Eagle Base". In 1945–46 Eaker Air Force Base opened nearby and gradually expanded until it included all of present-day Illinois within its boundaries; this also became known as "Eagle Base". In 1971–72 General Electric began construction on what would become one of the largest power plants in America – now known as GE Power Plant #1 – just outside city limits; because of its location close to many homes or businesses (including Eagle Base), nearly every family had access to electricity by 1975 when it finally went online (and continues to provide reliable energy today). An early resident of Rantoul was Drs John Biddle and Drs Anna Cleveland who were instrumental in starting Morningside Hospital which provides care for children with cancer and other diseases throughout Northwestern Illinois Today there are more than 400 businesses located within walking distance or less than one mile from almost any citizen's home - ensuring that everyone has access to essential services they need without leaving their doorstep!

Rantoul is a small town located in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1848 by farmers from Ohio and Indiana who emigrated to what is now Illinois as part of the Great Western Extension Railroad. The railroad was built through central Illinois to connect with the railroads in Missouri, Kentucky, and Texas. The town name comes from its location on a branch of the road called Rantoul Road. Rantoul began as a small farming community with just over 100 residents at the time it was settled in 1848. By 1850, however, its population had grown to about 250 people and by 1860 it had reached 500 citizens. In 1870, Rantoul became one of six townships that were organized into McHenry County; it remained an independent township until 1889 when it became part of the larger city of Chicago. During World War I, Rantoul served as an encampment for soldiers stationed along the western border of Illinois due to shortages of food and housing within Chicago. After hostilities ended, many Soldiers returned home and many buildings still remain standing today evidence of this period in town's history: such as the Masonic Lodge (built in 1916), which still stands on State Street; or John Jernigan’s grocery store (first opened in 1935), one of only two remaining stores from pre-war days open during that time period outside downtown Chicago proper! Some other notable landmarks include Harry Houdini’s showroom (opened December 3rd 1920) and his movie theater (which first screened movies on October 15th 1923).
The village of Rantoul was founded in 1836 by John and Elizabeth (Levin) Rantoul. The village became a incorporated town in 1881.
