One of the men became known as "Ransom" because he had been released on bail after serving four months of a five-year sentence for attempted robbery at the same farmhouse two years earlier while he was still in service with the Missouri Volunteers In 1881 Rantoul received its own post office which continued to serve until 1907 when it merged into Springfield's mail system
