Rantoul is a small town in southern Illinois, population about 1,200. It is located about 10 miles east of Carbondale and 25 miles west of Peoria. The village was founded in 1868 by John Rantoul and his wife, Eliza Prentice. At the time of its incorporation, it consisted of just a few homes and a store. The first post office was established in 1870. The name "Rantoul" comes from the French word "rantoir," meaning to rant or rave. One theory suggests that the shouting and yelling that characterize this area were once common occurrences during hunting trips across the plain where Rantoul now stands. John Rantoul had been living in Carbondale for some time before moving to Rantoul in 1868. He had heard about the nearby city of Peoria and decided to move there because he thought it would be easier to get around on foot than on horseback. He started out selling goods door-to-door, but quickly realized that he needed more space to sell his products. So he erected a small building on Church Street near his home, which served as his business headquarters until he bought an additional building on Third Street in 1875. In addition to their storefronts, John and Eliza also built several modest houses around town until they could afford something better (one house still stands today). They soon became known as "the Main Street Gals." Their motto was: "We do things our way - always." They were instrumental in developing the economy of their town, playing an important role both as merchants and public figures. In fact, John Rantoull was so successful that he helped build one of Carbondale's few schools – Trinity Lutheran School – back when education wasn't very common in these parts! In 1893, when John passed away at age ninety-eight years old, Eliza continued running her business until her death two years later at age eighty-six; she remains one of Carbondale's most popular residents today! John's son Harry took over operations after his mother's death; Harry continued operating the business until 1986 when it merged with another local company into one big organization called American Cyanamid Corporation (ACM).
