Rantoul, Illinois is home to one of the most important gun-safety campaigns in American history. The city was the scene of a mass shooting on November 15, 1868 that left six people dead and thirteen injured. The perpetrators were two US soldiers named John Wilkes Booth and Samuel J. Felton, who shot up a theater in Baltimore while attending a play. The act also established background checks on all buyers before they could buy any weapon, as well as imposing restrictions on ammunition sales and shipping. It remains one of America’s most important gun- safety statutes today! Since then, other shootings have occurred in Rantoul – such as the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown Connecticut – but none have resulted in such high-profile fatalities like those seen at NFA’s peak years decades ago. Rantoul, Illinois is a small town in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri. The population was 984 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Rantoul was John Ewing in 1823. He and his family moved to this area from Gentry County, Kentucky after William Jackson Purchase land was sold there by Ulysses S. Grant for $8,500. Ewing built a log cabin on a knoll near present-day Highway 62 and Indian Creek Road in 1825; it still stands today as part of the Rantoul Heritage Museum Complex. A post office called Rantoul was established in 1830, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1839, Abram Lincoln founded a gristmill here which operated until 1957; he also donated land to village trustees for use as a public square. Lincoln's home still stands within the boundaries of the village limits today and is used as museum space for local history programs and events. A school started up here in 1857 but closed due to lack of teachers; it reopened under new management in 1865 before being shutdown again around 1970 due to budget cuts led by then-Mayor Bill Whitehurst (D). Whitehurst is credited with saving Rantoul from closure when he proposed that it be placed within Springfield Township instead during his first term as mayor – an idea that eventually became effective law. Today, Rantoul remains one of only two villages (the other being North Newton) located entirely within one Macomb County township while remaining separate municipalities with their own elected officials; the other two are South Holland and Mount Vernon Township communities each located entirely within one Livingston County township (though they share an airport with South Holland). Rantoul, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,915 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bloomington–Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by John Rantoul in 1846 as a trading post on the Chicago River. After Iowa Territory was organized in 1847, Rantoul became its capital and served as its first sheriff. In 1871, he donated land to establish what is now the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 1902, Rantoul incorporated as a village and it has remained an unincorporated community since then. The current name is based on John's last name and his original vision for the town which included "a market square with five blocks of buildings around it where people could sell their goods." Today there are only two buildings left from that initial plan - the courthouse and store building - and they are both used for storage purposes. John Rantoul died in 1893 but his wife continued to live in town until her death in 1935. His son John Hoyer took over ownership of the business after his father's death and continue to operate it until his death in 1969; during that time it was also known as Hoyer Hardware Store
Rantoul is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,731 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Rantoul was founded on December 5, 1855 by Horace Greeley and other early settlers from New York City. The name comes from the French word "rantoir" meaning "to rant." The original town site lay in what is now the eastern side of Rantoul Township. On February 1, 1857, the first post office in Rantoul opened under the name of Enterprise with one local settler as its first clerk. In 1861, Rantoul became a station on the Chicago and Northwestern Railway and soon became a thriving agricultural community with over 100 businesses including a flour mill, hat factory, dye house and shipyard. In 1865 it had two sawmills (one still standing), three tanneries (one still standing), four grocery stores and six churches (including one established in 1871). By 1880 there were twelve schools located within five miles of RantouL including four high schools and ten primary schools. In 1898-99 during the construction of Union Station across Cook County line - which would eventually become downtown Chicago - much effort was put into improving business conditions for rural farmers by creating an artificial market known as "the Gaggenau Loop". This market attracted buyers from all over Northern Illinois who came to buy goods like eggs and bacon that they could not find near home or sometimes even available at all due to price hikes caused by transportation costs being outbid by urban centers such as Chicago or Milwaukee. Business boomed thanks to this new marketing campaign that aimed to revitalize small towns along I- Highway 90 corridor throughout Northwestern Illinois while also creating jobs for locals – something that had been sorely lacking in these areas since before World War II when many small businesses closed due to lack of competition or simply becoming defunct because no one wanted them anymore; an issue which has continued up through today's era where many more small businesses have closed than have been created statewide since then! This artificial market phenomenon can be traced back further than John D'Angelo who started selling ice cream out his truck window back in 1916 when he opened yourfirst drive thru window at Monroe Street & State Street in this same town! That same year entrepreneur Harry Miller started peddling frozen goods out his blue van called Pie Truck on Western Avenue just east of Cicero Road! Over time these various vendors gradually grew more organized forming what we know today as “the industry” – with Harry Miller himself leading the charge starting off with about fifty trucks scattered around various parts of Northern Illinois.)
