Rantoul is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2000 census. The community was founded in 1849 by James Rantoul and his family. It was named after the Rantoul River which flows through it. The first settlers were Native Americans who came to the area during the time of French and Indian War. In 1810, General David Gregg built a cabin on an hill near present-day Rantoul. After Gregg's death in 1811, his son John took over responsibility for running the property and called it "Gregg's Hill." John's wife Abigail served as cook and housekeeper for several years until she married Colonel Henry Griggs in 1821. They bought land from Gridley Township east of present day Pembroke Township in 1825 and renamed their new holdings "Rantoul." In 1830, Drury & Company began delivering goods by horseback from Chicago to Springfield via Rantoul Creek. By 1840, there were three shops serving farmers along Rantoul Creek: one run by Ephraim Griggs (father of Colonel Henry Griggs), another by Joshua Barney (son of Joshua Barney), and a third operated by Abraham Lincoln’s father-in-law Nicholas Halstead (Halstead’s Store). A post office was established at Rantoul in 1850; it continued to be used until 1906 when a telephone line became available. A sawmill operated here from about 1800 until about 1903 when all operations were discontinued due to waterlogging issues around the mill pond; however, parts of the mill remain standing today as Historical Markers #8 & 9 on State Road 3 between milepost 157 and 158 south of downtown Renton
Rantoul is a town in Dixon, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,641 at the 2010 census. It was named after General James Monckton Rantoul who fought in the Mexican-American War.
