Rantoul is a small town located in southern Illinois. It is bounded by the Mississippi River on the north, Rantoul Township on the east, Carbondale Township on the south, and Edwardsville Township on the west. The population of Rantoul was 524 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit what is now Rantoul was Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette in 1679. He named it for his birthplace, Ratisbonne in France. A post office called Rantoul started operations in 1837. Rantoul became a village from December 1, 1881 until May 15, 1888 when it became an incorporated town under Act No. 9 of 1888. At this time it had a population of 363 people and was governed by a board of trustees. On October 2, 1920, it became an unincorporated community again under Act No. 278 of 1920 which made all changes within its borders permanent without vote by residents or Town Councils as required by state law then; however Village status continued to be held for select officials such as fire Marshal and School Superintendent until repeal effective January 1, 1967 withVillage being unofficially designated "Industrial Park" . In 1935 Village voters passed a resolution asking that its name change to "Rantoul Industrial Park". This request was granted effective July 7th thru August 2nd 1935 with voting results announced in local papers not long afterwards The name change came about because at that time there were already other industrial parks established in neighboring towns so there seemed no reason to duplicate efforts here given that they all had similar names

Rantoul is a small town in Putnam County, Illinois, United States. It was founded on November 1, 1847 by William H. Rantoul and his wife Mary Ann. The town was named after the Rantoul Ridge located in central Illinois. The ridge is a high mountain range that separates Illinois from Michigan Territory. The first permanent settler in Rantoul was John Crain who purchased land east of the village on November 1, 1847. He built a cabin and raised corn and cattle until he sold his land to James Wolkentin on February 2, 1850. Wolkentin offered to buy the cabin and improvements from Crain but the latter refused because he wanted to keep them for himself as an individual property rather than sell them to others. A post office was established at Rantoul on December 2, 1849; it remained in operation until it was discontinued on July 20, 1912. A store opened in 1851 which became known as the "Hometown Store". One of the early pioneers of Rantoulls name recognition was Eli Whitney who settled there about 1840 with his family from New York City where he had been born two years earlier. He started a farm near present-day downtown Rantoul with some equipment he had brought with him when he moved westward along the Great Lakes shoreline in search of new territory during the Indiana Jones movie series (1948). Whitney later served as president of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company based in Chicago from 1926 to 1951 and died there in 1965 at age 90 years old while still living within walking distance of his original home at 601 N Main Street.. In 1865 three men – Elijah Cooksey, George Washington Goodwin Sr., and Hiram Sutter – laid out an area that would become downtown Rantoul proper including what are now alleyways between buildings called First National Bank Building (now Second National Bank) on one side and Main Street on the other side – this area is now part of Fourth Ward Library District #2 . In 1870 Gopher John Brown platted what became North Side Cemetery (now South Side Cemetery) near what is now Fifth Ward Library District #1 . On October 5th & 6th 1861 five men under contract from Ottawa Land Company laid out lots around what would become nucleus square formed into north/south streets NW 10th St & E 4th Ave NW corner then SW corner today’s Elm St & State St intersection alignment also surveyed by USGS but never executed due lack of available funds only naming rights given to newly formed city hall building today’s Old courthouse square Lot No 9 Captain Cook sod house built by Nicholas Nicolai 1793
