Rantoul is a small town in the northwestern corner of Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located about south of Chicago on the Rantoul River. The town was founded in 1853 by Ebenezer Scudder and his wife Susan Scudder as a farmstead on land ceded to them by their father-in-law, Amasa Burritt. They named it after Rantoul Township, Illinois, in which they had lived before moving to this location in 1851. In 1858, they organized as a village and adopted a seal with an agricultural implement called "the ploughshare." Rantoul was one of several townships formed from parts of Cook County when that county was divided into two divisions in 1861 pursuant to the Redistricting Plan of 1862. The rest of Cook County was transferred to DuPage County following the Civil War. In 1924, Rantoul annexed part of Cicero Village and changed its name to Cicero Township; but it reverted back to Rantoul Township eight years later when Cicero withdrew from township government. In 1970, RantouL merged with neighboring village Grayslake (population 3,476) and became Grayslake-Ranthoul Township (population 909). The merger resulted in an increase in population from 1,887 people at the time to 2,052 people as both villages consolidated their offices into one building on State Street near Interstate 57/I-94 northbound exit 17A/Exit 17B within less than two years after their incorporation into township form according to township records kept by Clerk Lesley A. Whitehurst since 1978; however residents may have continued using either name until 1985 when township officials changed it back to Grayslake-Ranthoul Township effective July 1st according to records maintained by her predecessor Mrs....

Rantoul is a small town in the Ozarks of Illinois. It has been home to residents since 1854, when it was founded by General James K. Polk and his wife, Lucy A. Polk. The population was 614 at the 2010 census, down from 715 at the 2000 census. Rantoul is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The town was named for John Prentiss Rantoul, a captain in Polk's army who served during the Mexican-American War as an interpreter and military advisor to General Antonio López de Santa Anna. On May 10, 1854, President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated Rantoul as one of five towns in Missouri that would be placed within the newly created Stroudsburg–Mt Pleasant Township municipality according to a executive order issued on April 14, 1954 under then President Dwight D. Eisenhower's administration. In 1870s local farmers started raising corn and other crops using slave labor on their plantations; this led to protests by abolitionists who denounced slavery as inhuman and unenlightening practice that benefited only white people while impoverishing African Americans (the "Black Belt"). In 1865 Union troops burned down many of these farms; however, some still operated until after World War I.
