The village of Rantoul was founded in 1836 by John Davenport and his family as a place to raise maize for their farmstead and other purposes. In 1841, the first post office was established in the Village; it served only local residents. The village became incorporated as a city on December 5, 1892. On October 15, 1893, Mayor James Auld proposed to the Village Council that the name of Rantoul be changed from "Auldville" to "Rantoul", after General Philip Sheridan's victory at Bull Run Campaign (1862). After much discussion on what name to choose, it was decided that "Rantoul" would be more appropriate than either "Auldville" or "Bull Run". In 1902-1903 several buildings in downtown Rantoul were destroyed by fire which caused $5200 worth of damage ($ when adjusted for inflation). On November 13th 1903 Mayor James Auld announced an $800 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for this arson spree. No arrests were made until 1935 when enumerator Harry Kapp discovered evidence that some people had been bribing local officials with bribes totaling $4000 over ten years in order to keep quiet about the fires! Rantoul has experienced many changes throughout its history; most notably during World War II when it became one of eight communities within US Army Camp McNab located just outside town limits where troops were housed during wartime. The war also saw significant growth in downtown businesses including a movie theater and grocery store which remain open today.

Rantoul is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1854 by two brothers, Jacob and Rufus Rantoul, as a farmstead on the east side of present-day Rantoul Township. The first post office in Rantoul was established in 1855. The township was organized on November 15, 1857, from portions of Will County. On December 5, 1861, the village of Rantoul was incorporated under the name of that town; it became an independent municipality on January 1, 1912.[1] On March 17, 1930 (the date of incorporation), the village had a total population of 2152 and its boundaries were changed to encompass all but a tiny strip along its north border which remained with Rantoul Township until 1966 when it became an enclave within Cook County proper. The economy of Rantoul is based largely on agriculture and trade; items such as cheese and eggs are produced there for local consumption or export to other parts of Illinois or Wisconsin during colder months. A large portion of the community's infrastructure has been built since World War II: Most notably are three high schools - Morton Hargrave High School (opened in 1957), Edward Jones High School (opened in 1984) and South Side Community College (opened in 2003). In addition to these public schools there are several private schools: Holy Cross Academy (1930), Mount Carmel Catholic School (founded 1954), Our Lady Of Angels Catholic School(1983), Stritch-Lincoln Preparatory School(1973) and many others including Weingarten Prepatory & Technical HS for Prekindergarten through 12th grade as well as vocational/technical schools like Meineke Automotive Service Center[2], American Legion Post 927[3] and more recently JB Hi-Fi Grill & Lounge which opened up shop next door to Salty Joe’s Pizza after being closed for about 10 years[4]. As one might expect given its rural setting, much farmland remains within Rantoultown limits today although some development has taken place such as new homes developments adjacent to old farms while also adjacent businesses have moved into newer buildings closer to shopping centers or other services available nearby like Meditrust Bank Plaza[5]. There are also few structures remaining from pioneer days such as gristmills still standing among mature trees Enterprise Rent-A-Car Clubhouse still used by management company now known as ABC Corporation [6], blacksmith shop unchanged since 1830 Potters Mill home now occupied by Pritchett Auto Parts Store
The first Europeans to visit the area were Frenchmen in 1763. The area was part of the Northwest Territory until it was ceded to the United States in 1803. Rantoul is named for Captain John Rantoul, a U.S. lieutenant and explorer who explored the Illinois River in 1795-96 and later served as a U.S. Senator from Illinois.
