Rantoul, Illinois is a town located in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlement in Rantoul was made on November 5, 1836 by John Hays and his family from Kentucky. They named their new town after General James Kapp's ranch near Rome, Kansas. By 1838 the community had grown to about fifty people and two stores. In 1840 Captain Ainsworth bought land in what is now Rantoul from the Hayses for $2 per acre ($26 in current money). This purchase set off an era of growth for Rantoul as a center of commerce and culture in central Kane County. Captain Ainsworth's son-in-law Isaac Stevens opened the first post office in Rantoul on December 15, 1840. The early years of this business were difficult because no one wanted to deal with Spanish settlements east of the Mississippi River that were growing rapidly due to Mexican efforts to open up these territory to American settlers. However, over time Stevens built up a successful mail service that helped promote commerce within Central Illinois and beyond. In 1845 Captain Ainsworths died suddenly and his estate was divided among his several children who all took equal shares with only one common goal – making sure their father's legacy lived on through their families' businesses and institutions which would continue until 1912 when they merged into one organization called The Chicago Tribune Company Limited Partnership (later Tribune Media Corporation). However many residents still remember Captain Ainsworth fondly because he was instrumental in developing Rantoul into a thriving community known for its fine shopping districts filled with local merchants such as Mr. Smith (a grocery store), Jno Gorman (a tailor), Mrs Laughlin ( bead maker) etc., as well as its many cultural attractions including three theaters which played productions by local artists during popular summer season periods: "The Fenton Ladies" at Gorman's home; "Penguin Pie" every Thursday night at Hislop’s Tavern; while also hosting concerts by visiting artists such as Purlie Fields or Buffalo Bill Cody during important tourist seasons like July Fourth or Christmas Eve… During this time period there also existed a large blacksmith shop adjacent to Mr. Smith’s store where skilled craftsmen fashioned items such as cannonsights for military purposes or farm implements….this unique business quarter continued producing quality goods until it closed around 1940…. Main Street today preserves much of this trading history along with some interesting architecture from various eras including original storefronts built around 1860–1870 In 1847 Captain Ainsworth married Sarah Jane Greenough who became an accomplished cook/housekeeper/nurse living next door to him at 404 Wacker Drive until her death in 1906 leaving behind six children: Isabella Jane (born 1850), Alfred Edward (born 1852), Edwin Seymour (born 1856), Clara Maynard (born 1860), Rosalind Augusta ( born 1862) and Rose Anna Maynard( born 1865). Sarah Jane owned numerous enterprises within her community including three general stores:Captain Ainsworth’s Store; Mrs Laughlin’s Store; & Isaac Stevens’ Post Office Department Store which she operated jointly with her husband Captains son-in-law Steven From 1850 until his death 1886 inclusive….. These stores are significant not only historically but architecturally too given that each building featured an intricate wood frame structure typical of the era……... main street today offers excellent evidence of both Sarah Jane Greenough’s BUSINESS acumen & FAMILYMENSHIP commitment 2 RANDOUL
