Rantoul has many cultural attractions including the annual Norwegian Folk Festival held each summer; Krusty Klub - an amusement park that features coasters such as "Gran Torino" and "Crazy Horse", which opened in 1951; and Hiawatha Hall - a historic district with Tudor-style buildings that includes several churches dating back to 1868 including St John's Episcopal Church (now Holy Name Catholic Church), which was built on land donated by Andrew Johnson; and Ohsweken Indian Reservation Museum - an educational center housed inside an old trading post on Hiawatha Avenue that also houses several antique shops, gift stores, restaurants, and motel rooms used during American Indian Wars between 1855-1890s.

The town of Rantoul, Illinois was founded on a farm in 1837. The first post office in the township was established in 1839. In 1861, the township was made a part of Rockford County and it remained that way until it became a part of Humboldt County in 1893. The population of Rantoul peaked at 2,500 in 1915 before slowly declining over the next few decades. By 1930, the population had dwindled to just 100 people. However, because of its small size and lack of industry, Rantoul experienced significant economic growth during the late twentieth century. Since 2000, however, there has been little change to its demographics; most residents are still seasonal workers or retirees.
Rantoul, Illinois was an incorporated town in the county of McHenry, in the state of Illinois, United States. It is now a ghost town and census-designated place (CDP) within McHenry County. The population at the 2010 census was 469. Rantoul was founded by refugees from what is now Hungary in 1847. The original settlers were Germans who had fled to America following the Napoleonic Wars. They built a huts and a mill on the banks of the Rantoul River. In 1849, they organized themselves as a town under the name of "Rantoul". In 1857, they changed their name to "McHenry" after General James H. McHenry who had led American forces against Mexico during the Mexican–American War. The first post office was established in Rantoul on November 15, 1849. The first store opened on October 17, 1850; it was operated by Bendix Grosvenor until 1860 when it became part of Wm Fenton's mercery store which later became known as McFarlane & Son Hardware Company; also located here until around 1880 were grocery stores operated by Acker & Haggerty which became Shultz Bros.; Jakes Emporium; and finally Appleton Agricultural Supply Co., all owned and operated by George Willard Appleton Sr., one of Rantoul's early residents and its founder. In 1861, local blacksmiths began to supply cars with iron for local businesses starting with Wm Fenton’s mercery store which continued being open until 1865 when it closed because he could not find buyers for his products due to racial prejudice towards blacks in America at that time
