A post office was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1924. On October 15, 1888, Dr. Samuel Morse visited Rantoul with his Transmission Line Company to inaugurate the first telegraph line between Chicago and Rockford. In 1893-1894 the original town hall building burned down; a new building was erected in 1895-96 using funds from a local subscription campaign. In 1902-03 an electric street light system was installed; this continued until 1925 when Telephone service began within the village limits (it had been available within Rockford since 1892). According to the 2000 census, there were 1,711 people living in Rantoul at that time; 553 of these lived in one or more of its attached villages: Bogan (below Rantoul), Champaign Heights/New Beginnings (above Galesburg), East Dundee/Merrillville/Reservoir Hills (above Moline), or West Dundee (below Rolling Meadows). At that time there were also 11 businesses located within Village boundaries: five agricultural dealerships and four feed mills; two hotels and three restaurants serving extended rural areas beyond Village boundaries; one printing press employing thirty workers out of a total population of 800 persons employed therein at that time; one bank representative office open six days per week during afternoon hours only providing accounts payable services to other banks within twenty miles radius around Chicago; all eleven businesses are now defunct except for two agricultural dealerships which have reopened as small business entities limited liability companies licensed by state authorities to do credit card processing for farmers located outside their villages limits - previously they provided transportation services only;sixteen residents served on village board including seven trustees who held office concurrent with those elected by residents - all but two incumbents have since passed away leaving one trusteeship vacancy after last election which will be filled by an election set for March 3rd 2019’s term limit provisionally approved .
