In 1834, Quincy became a city and was named in honor of General John Quincy Adams, signing over its government to Chicago as part of their merger into what would become America's largest city. Today, Quincy remains an important community with a rich cultural heritage that includes traditional African American music and dance performance artistry as well as fashion designers such as Karl Lagerfeld and Zac Posen. Quincy is a town in and the county seat of Quincy County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,281 at the 2010 census. Quincy was founded in 1821 by Captain John Quincy and his family as a location for their farmstead on the western bank of the Kankakee River. It became an incorporated village in 1847. Quincy is located near Chicago, about southeast of Peoria and about northwest of Stokies. The first settler in Quincy was Captain John Quincy who arrived there from Kentucky in 1821. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Quincy". He soon started to grow potatoes and corn on his land which he gave to his wife and children as gifts. They continued to cultivate their land until they decided to move away from Kentucky because of the harsh winters there. They moved eastward along the Kankakee River until they reached what is now known as Park Avenue where they built their first house. Captain John Quincy's son-in-law, Nicholas Carleton also began farming here around this time before moving westward into Medina County some years later. In 1830, Nicholas Carleton donated 3 acres (1 hectare) of land north of today's First National Bank building on Washington Street to become part of what would become Quincy Township. The township was organized on February 14, 1830 under the name "Qunicy Township". In 1847, following efforts by Representative Charles Latham Wright to create a new state government for southern Illinois including parts of Kendall County that had been claimed by Quinnipiac University since 1796 (the school had earlier moved from Hartford), General Samuel Phillips merged Quinnipiac with other northeastern colleges forming DePaul University which would later become Northwestern University in 1906). On October 15th 1800 – one week after Union forces burned Springfield – Governor James Buchanan signed an act organizing Illinois into a new state with its own government including all but 8 counties in Kendall County including Quinnipiac University lands within Orleans Parish including those for Quincy Township within Parkville City limits (). This event is generally considered as day one when Illinois became a united country with its own currency system and Constitution instead of being governed by Missouri & Indiana like it had been since 1796 when Yale & Princeton had operated outposts here while educationally sophisticated Indians hunted them down (& scalped) & scalp'd them….. Qunicy Township formed partof that newly organized Government…. [It] indicates how much influence this community wields within present day suburban Cook County’s borders! After being incorporation into Village form 1850 Quincy grew rapidly becoming home to many farmers working our farms growing crops & raising livestock helping support families during tough times such as World War I when prices were high due to insufficient crop production etc………. EventuallyQuincy transitioned from Rural Village form towards full Time Town status……………………………………….. [This happened] due To rapid industrial growth linked directly with advances made thru Manufacturing processes……….. With Increased Population density came increased demand for infrastructure such as Roads, Schools/Highways etc making everyday life easier for citizens………………….. Today QuinnipiacTownship still has strong ties To Its rural roots however many residents are no longer farmer’s daughters or sons but have chosen careers outside Of Agriculture…………………. Businesses include Law Offices; Mgt./Telecommunications; Retail Drug Store; Real Estate Development; Restaurants
