Quincy, Illinois is a small town located in the Ozarks of south-central Missouri. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Quincy's history began with pioneer settlers in 1819 who named it for John Quincy Adams, a U.S. Congressman from Massachusetts and second president of the United States (1797-1801). In 1848, Quincy became an independent city by charter and was renamed after General James K. Polk, then the Secretary of War under President William McKinley (1896-1901). In 1960, Quincy joined the Illinois suburbs of Chicago as part of suburbanization in Illinois. Its name has been changed several times since then to reflect its changing demographics: as a city in 1948, a suburb in 1960, and now an inner-city suburb again. The first white settlers arrived in what is today Quincy on April 6, 1819 when John Quincy Adams sent his son Jonathan to explore land grant developments that had been given him by Sir Richard Richardson near modern day Springfield Township and Washington County Courthouse square. Adams founded a small village called Westboro on this land which he named for his home state – Missouri – because he wanted people from there to know about his new village and not just refer to Springfield Township or Washington County as their home country’s “home town”1 . The first post office opened at Westboro on July 1st, 18202 . By 1830 most residents were engaged in agriculture4 . White settlement increased rapidly due to $5 per acre grants available through the Louisiana Purchase (1803) which added much needed territory into Missouri6 . One hundred acres were granted to Elijah Hicks9 ; this parcel would eventually become known as Old Hickory Row10 On July 24th 1840 Samuel Holland agreed to sell 640 acres including present day Quincy northeast of Fenton Road east of Springdale Road11 On December 9th 1840 Holland sold an additional 432 acres extending into what is now Union Township12 On January 12th 1861 Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 11359 which designated all future Indian reservations within Kansas Territory as Cherokee Nation Lands13 On February 15th 1861 Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 11520 which established eight counties within Kansas Territory14 These orders resulted from Congress' passage of the Indian Appropriations Act 186215 This act provided for $3 million dollars over five years that would be earmarked for Native American education and other general purposes16 In 1863 two more executive orders were passed; one designating Cherokee Nation Lands as part of Arkansas Territory17 and another providing for compensation for those losses caused by Civil War hostilities18 These orders did not take effect until 1865 19 Between 1860 - 1865 total Native American acreage decreased from 144 Million acres to less than 10 Million acres20 The end result was forced sale or deportation of many tribespeople21 Many members perished during these difficult years22
