Quincy, Illinois is home to one of the most famous gun safes in all of America, the Armoury Safe. This safe was designed by Samuel Morse and built in Quincy, Illinois between 1858 and 1860. The Armoury Safe is now on display at the Quinnipiac University Museum of Art in Haddam, Connecticut. The Armoury Safe was originally constructed as a part of the Quincy Arsenal. The Quincy Arsenal was located in Quincy, Illinois and operated from 1858 to 1865. It was built as a part of the War Department’s efforts to arm American citizens during the Civil War. The arsenal also served as a storage depot for munitions and other military supplies. The first ArmourySafe Was Built In Quincy Armory In 1858, Samuel Morse designed and built the first armourysafe for use at the Quincy Arsenal. The armourysafe consisted of a metal frame with an oak door that opened into an interior cupola-like structure. The safe had two layers of protection: an inner layer made out of solid brass casks filled with powder and shot, and an outer layer made out of thick iron plates that featured rifle bolts instead of nails or screws. The armourysafe remained in use until 1865 when it was decommissioned due to lack Of funding. However, it still remains one of America’s most iconicgun safesand can be found today at Quinnipiac University Museum Of Art in Haddam, Connecticut

Quincy, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. Quincy was platted in 1827 and named for General Josiah Quincy, an American military officer who served in the War of 1812. The population was 12,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Qurick Township No. 2 platting date: July 3, 1827 Qurick Township No. 1 platting date: November 10, 1826 The first settler in Quincy was Gideon Hinton, who arrived there on August 5th, 1827 from Fayette County Indiana with his family and five cows and one horse. He erected a log cabin on what is now State Street which he named "Hinton's Grove." He had no children and died intestate about two years later in 1830 leaving behind him a widow (and four young children) and $2 U.S.$10 worth of property (valued today at $151 million). His widow married Amos DeWitt Neely on October 7th 1830 and continued to live here until her death in 1865; she was buried at Hillside Cemetery also located near where she lived during her lifetime. Neely then sold his interest to John Dolan as one-fourth share (the remaining three-fourths being held by Mr. Neely’s daughter Abby de Witte). Mr Dolan built his first home on what is now Green Street between Walnut and Elm Streets – this house still stands today as part of the Village Green shopping center complex across the street from it; it has been remodeled several times since its construction circa 1915/16 including adding original 16x24 inch high glass walls reminiscent of early 19th centuryrevival architecture Quirky history started with Gideon Hinton’s Log Cabin #1 which resided approximately 2 ½ miles east of present day Quinnipiac Junction Road on what became known as “Hinton’s Grove” or “Green Street” due to its large amount of trees surrounding it when it was built back around 1800 (~100 years ago!). In fact there are still some trees standing today that were once located near where our current intersection stands! From Hinton’s Log Cabin #1 other pioneers soon followed such as Ebenezer Phelps who built #2 & #3 just south side Quinnipiac Road next door to Hinton’s Grove (~1830), Solomon Grundy who lived opposite (& bordering) Hinton’s Grove west & north side road (1831), Jabez Beecher & Amos Briggs ~circa 1832-33 (~north side road only), James Kappenheimer (~1835-36)…etc etc etc! This list goes on forever because throughout those early days many people graced this township dumpster area which would become known more commonly as “Quincy Corner!” Today you can find remnants of these pioneer beginnings all over downtown Quincy – especially along State Street between Elm & Walnut Streets where today you can find numerous buildings constructed primarily during the late 1800′s through into the 1900′s such as The Fox Tavern/Grocery Store situated atop an earlier building dating back to 1793 (!): humble Beginnings indeed!!
