On July 1, 1859, the post office name was changed to "Quincy" after General David Dixonquinty who fought in the Mexican–American War and also served as Mayor of Quincy from 1861-1865. Today's downtown Quincy anchors the city's eastern edge with its mix of architecture dating back to the 1830s including several churches and two public squares that have been used for performances by orchestras and other events since 1963. The town has been home to many famous people including Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant; both were born there. In 1898 Lincoln delivered a speech from Drake University's amphitheater which remains one of history's most memorable speeches today. In 1915 President Woodrow Wilson made an address from Quincy High School that remains one of the most famous addresses in Illinois history today.

In 1818, Quincy became the first town in Illinois to be organized as a village. By 1830, Quincy had become one of the most vibrant communities in Illinois. However, economic conditions in Illinois were challenging during this time period and many businesses closed or went out of business. In 1834, Quincy was officially incorporated as a city with its own government and mayor. The city suffered some significant setbacks during this period including a devastating fire that destroyed much of the city center in 1835. During this time period also came another important development for Quincy – it became home to the first successful cotton gin in the United States. This event helped boost Quincy’s economy and made it one of the most prosperous cities in Illinois during this time period
