Quincy, Illinois is a small town located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. Quincy was founded by the Potawatomi tribe in 1792. The first white settler in Quincy was John Shaw, who arrived in 1803. In 1834, Quincy became a city and was renamed to Quincy after General David Dixon. The population of Quincy peaked at over 20,000 in 1920 and declined to around 10,000 by 1970. Today, Quincy has a population of about 8,500 residents and is home to the Quinnipiac University Bobcats basketball team and the local high school football team. Quincy's history can be traced back to its founding by the Potawatomi tribe. In 1792, these Native Americans moved from their original land near present-day Chicago to what is now northwestern Cook County on the Sanitary River. The Potawatomi built their first village here around 1794-95. By 1800, they had established several villages throughout northeastern Cook County including one at Shaw Landing on the Fox River where they raised maize crops and hunted game for sustenance. In 1803 John Shaw settled at Shaw Landing with his family and began construction on a log cabin that he named Prairie du Chien (Prairie of Apples). He later acquired additional land nearby which he used for farming and hunting until 1830 when he sold his holdings to Joel Lane Sr., father of Joel Lane Jr., who served as Mayor of Quincy from 1840-1846 and again from 1868-1870 under President James K. Polk’s administration. On December 3rd 1830, during anAll Saints day services service held at Prairie du Chien Chapel (now Trinity United Methodist Church), Jesse Waguespack officiated as pastor when Representative Daniel Webster called out “Hearken unto me O Israel; thou art our God” (Deuteronomy 6:8). This event marked the beginning of Congregationalism in northeastern Illinois which would eventually become part of America – following the Great Awakening Period across much of North America during the early 19th century led by evangelical pastors such as Webster himself! In 1834 Quincy became a city under state law through an act signed by Andrew Johnson when it became apparent that Champaign County would not expand southward due to lack of political support within that county for doing so – leading then Governor Johnson to sign legislation creating Quincy as an incorporated city with streets labeled “Oneida Street” eastbound only while Oneida Avenue westbound remained unpaved!. As part of this incorporation process; many aspects associated with Indian culture were removed from daily life including religion classes taught in local schools! The first white settler in Quincy was John Shaw who arrived in 1803 along with his family after purchasing some land adjacent to what is now Oneida Street between Adams Street and Northwestern Avenue from Joel Lane Sr.. That same year also saw advances made within agricultural technology thanks largely to Elijah White who developed a new system for threshing corn using cob crunches instead of hoes! While other technological advancements were also made here during this time such as water wheels used for grinding flour into meal or wagons used for carrying goods; it is likely that Elijah White's innovations most impacted agriculture because it allowed farmers greater flexibility with regards agrochemicals production methods! The growth within both economic activity & population reached its peak coinciding with American Civil War veteran General David Dixon's arrival (& permanent settlement) hereabouts late summer / fall 1861 followed soon thereafter by numerous business opportunitiesADS [and] rapid social & commercial changes brought about thru frontier living habituated people seeking opportunity thru open door migrationsALS [into] central IL
Quincy, Illinois was founded in 1795 by the brothers Samuel and John Quincy. The Quincys were avidggies and early settlers who purchased land in the area which would later become Quincy. In 1815, they donated a tract of land to the University of Illinois where it still sits today.
