Quincy, Illinois is a small town located in the far northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 9,738 at the 2010 census. Quincy is well known for its famous Quincy Market and its annual "QuincyFest". The first European to visit what is now Quincy was Jean Baptiste de La Salle who landed on the shore of present-day Quincy Bay on November 3, 1679. He named it after his patron saint, Saint Francis Xavier. A Jesuit mission was founded in 1763 by Father Gabriel Allouez near what is now downtown Quincy. The town's first post office was established in 1810. In 1836, Abraham Lincoln visited Quincy while he was campaigning for president and had dinner at the home of John Quinn that same year. In 1847, Congress passed an act annexing Champaign County to Illinois and giving it to Quincy as part of the new state boundaries; however this annexation did not take place until 1861 when Illinois became a United States territory following the Mexican–American War. The growth of larger towns such as Chicago and Peoria soon began to outpace that of Quincy; however, due to engineering advances made during World War II which created more jobs in heavy industry than throughout much of postwar America combined (the war led to an influx of blue-collar workers into rural areas), Quincy has retained a slight but steady population growth since 1990 despite continuing economic decline in many other parts of Cook County. A new high school building and gymnasium were completed in 2002; along with street resurfacing projects undertaken over time including resurfacing Route 56 from north-south towards downtown Springfield just south of Interstate 394 (now I-84) and reopening Route 22 from east-west across North Avenue into downtown Springfield after being closed for several years as part of reconstruction work caused by Hurricane Katrina). These investments have helped spur revitalization efforts within Quincy's historic core while also increasing access to education opportunities for all residents regardless socioeconomically or geographically speaking within their community - contributing positively to overall retail activity adjacent thereto currently resulting in increased property values adjacent thereto [+$1 million] since completion/enactment thereof notwithstanding any prior appreciation thereof having prevailed thereabouts hereinbefore existing thereinabouts according via market forces etc..).
