The first people who lived in what is now Quincy were Native Americans. In 1779, there were about 20 families living hereabouts and fishing as far up the Fox River as it would go. By 1800, there were 350 natives living hereabouts; by 1830, however, only 100 remain today... only 10% of these recent arrivals had any contact with Europeans until after they arrived hereabouts...nineteen percent came from Ireland while nearly 60% hailed from England or Scotland...In 1825-27 when Adam Frost built his gristmill on current site (now known as First Grist Mill), he hired Jens Jensen to grind his flour for him at an expense of $3 per day...A store started up soon afterwards (1828) operated by John Thorpe which sold groceries such as meat and fish along with some timber products such as oak boards for flooring...It should be noted that access to water was not easy back then because most residents fished from shoreline locations away from high water levels due to fear of being stung by jellyfish during high tide periods! Quincy's early years were filled with hard work in order to provide for its many residents. Many farmers founded churches here including one established in 1837 by Revista de la Raza parishioner Alonso Martinez who purchased land east of where First Grist Mill now stands... A school was also established early on and taught children between the ages of 6-12th grade alongside farming skills so that they could become selfreliant later on In 1865 when General Grant relieved General Ulysses S Grant's army near Egypt’s border following their successful march through Missouri and Kansas,... Upon reaching Egypt’s borders…the Union Soldiers discovered some goldfields but no one wanted to take them apart because they were too valuable! A group decided instead to enter into partnership with local businessmen James Fenton & Alfred Vail who agreed to do all the exploration and prospecting within 150 miles northeast of Cairo while also providing transportation services overland transporting equipment across rough terrain Fenton named this new venture “Kane Mining Company” after himself, Horatio Kanes (founder/director/owner/manager) ; Gouverneur Morris became Vice President In 1870 when Captain George Stephenson took over control from Captain George Stephenson president James Neilson patented a system called Stephenson gauge which allowed trains weighing less than 8 tons or 3 coaches 2 feet wide and 1 foot deep running at speeds up to 50 mph without having their brakes applied - this made travel throughout America much faster than ever before! This invention led directly to locomotive construction techniques we use today such asDeWitt Clinton Railroad System locomotives ! AfterCaptain Stephenson's death in 1872 an agreement was reached between Captain George Stephenson's widow Jane Neilson & Anthony Chatfield whereby Chatfield would operate Stephensons gauge line for her husband's company whilst JaneNeilson would continue running the Post office business until it closed down around 1880 . From then onward she continued running it until 1906 when it became part of US Railroads empire . As mentioned earlier Quinsy formed a city charter circa 1925 but never really grew past its size due largelyto prohibition which shut down most businesses in Quincy during WWI . However since repeal has brought back many former prohibition era jobs thus helping revive downtown Quincy again !! Todayquincy still has strong ties with Irish immigrants dating back prior TO Prohibition
