Richardson's original plat included a large blockhouse or stockade known today as the Richardson House (now home to IHOP). He built several other log huts for himself and his followers near what is now Higgins Road before permanent structures began to be erected in early 1800s: The Richardson House still stands today overlooking Higgins Road just north of its junction with Prospect Avenue; it served as both a headquarters for Richardsons' militia unit during the 1818 Illinois gubernatorial campaign and also housed their court house until 1827 when it burned down. After Richardsons' death in 1800, those responsible for developing Quincy Town gradually took over leadership responsibilities; first were two men associated with him directly - James Kappner Sr., later James Kappner Jr.--and then Isaac Norris (1783-1857), captain of boats on Lake Michigan during that period which saw great development aboard that body of water due not only to burgeoning industrial activity but also rising demand from settlers attracted to land newly accessible from Lake Michigan shores alone thanks to increased rainfall followingHurricane Andrew Plus additional opening up of southwestern Indiana through annexation by Illinois . Polk traveled through Quincy and noticed that it had become an important stop on the Great Northern Railway. Polk recommended that the town be named after him, which it was later renamed for him. Quincy continued to grow as a center of trade and commerce until the turn of the century when farming became more prevalent in the area. In 1902, Quincy incorporated as a city and has since grown into one of Illinois' largest cities with over 150,000 residents.
