Prospect Heights is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the east side of Chicago, between the city's limits to the north and Prospect Park to the south. The community was founded in 1892 by George Davenport and his family as a small agricultural village. The first post office opened in 1898; it was renamed Prospect Heights in 1912 when it became part of the then-new City of Chicago. In 1954, Prospect Heights became a census-designated place. The population peaked at 1,902 in 1970 but has since declined slightly; its current population is 614. In 1904, prospectors discovered rich copper deposits near what is now Prospect Heights; this led to increased settlement around the area and development of industry such as flour milling and cattle ranching. By 1930, many citizens had moved away from agriculture for more suburban lifestyles; however, some continued to live in prospect Heights until its closure downsized in 1990 due to budget cuts within Cook County government. The first white settlers in what would become Prospect Heights arrived in 1847. They were led by Capt. John P. Herrick, who had been sent by General Henry Dearborn to survey land for a new railroad line through the area. The community grew rapidly and soon boasted a population of over 100 people, many of whom were farmers or mechanics. In 1853, the Illinois Central Railroad built a track through the area and Prospect Heights became one of its stops. In 1861, when Illinois seceded from the United States, Prospect Heights became part of Canada as well. Despite this change in scenery, most residents remained supportive of their American-born neighbors and continued to grow crops and build homes. By 1870, prospects had dwindled somewhat due to competition from larger towns in neighboring counties but by 1880 there still existed about 20 houses in prospect Heights proper and nearly 400 people living there altogether. In 1907, following World War I (1914-1918), many Chicago businesses closed down as war stimulated economic decline throughout much of North America; however, some did stay open such as Wrigley's grocery store which reopened after Prohibition ended two years later (1920). However overall business conditions declined quickly thereafter with few exceptions until the Great Depression began in 1929 which impacted all aspects of society including business activity especially among immigrant groups like those from Hungary or Romania who often found it difficult to obtain jobs despite having good qualifications because no one wanted them anyway given that jobs were scarce during wartime times In 1933-34 prospect Heights lost its charter from City Councilmember George Stronger based on allegations that he refused to sell development rights for an expressway running through town should it be approved thereby sparing his constituents onetime growth potential while also preserving his own political power base among other city council members - although not everyone agreed with him politically) .
