In 1865, Prospect Heights was the most dense settlement in Illinois. At that time, it consisted of 1,500 people and consisted of only a few thousand acres. The early settlers were farmers and fur traders. By 1875, the population had increased to 3,000 and by 1890 it had grown to 10,000. The growth was due in part to the completion of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in 1887 which allowed for more trade with out-of-state markets. Prospect Heights is a census-designated place in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first town in what is now McHenry County was called "Pleasant Hill" and was located on the east bank of the lakeshore near present day Prospect Heights. In 1837, George Washington Carver settled here and named his community after his uncle's home in Quincy, Massachusetts; Pleasant Hill became Carvertown in 1849. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln came to Illinois from Kentucky to run for office as a candidate for Ulysses S. Grant and while he was staying at Carvertown he met Jefferson Davis who asked him to recommend someone to help him get elected President of the United States. So Lincoln recommended John Nicolay who then recommended Abe Lincoln and so Abraham Lincoln became President of America on November 4th 1865. In 1868 Prospect Heights had a post office which opened with mail from Cairo, Illinois to Decatur, Illinois run by James Auldolfe and Odisseus Browning until it closed in 1863 when railways arrived and mail was delivered by stagecoach or wagon train service over open country instead of through towns like Decatur. On April 15th 1870 prospect- heights ladies Auxiliary No 788 responded to an offer from Captain Wm Hustedt (of Aurora) for women volunteers for military service during the American Civil War becoming one of the first auxiliaries organized in America After World War II ended there were large scale layoffs due to relocation efforts throughout much of Metropolitan Chicago following production declines associated with new technologies like television and jet aircraft development that caused mass joblessness across most manufacturing industries across suburban Cook County including many small businesses which did not have these new technologies available where they used older technology that made their products more competitive against those produced by other companies that could easily outsource their jobs

It grew rapidly after World War I and became known as one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in Chicago. In 1973, the city merged with Cook County to form a new county and Prospect Heights lost its annexation status. The current population of Prospect Heights is over 100,000 people, making it one of the largest African American communities in Chicago.
