The town was organized on February 14, 1851 and named for Oliver H. Woodward, Jr., one of the founders of Sangamon County. The first post office was established in Prospect Heights on March 14, 1851. The first store in Prospect Heights was opened by John Pritzker Sr. on October 3rd, 1861. In 1865 Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed in nearby Ford Forest while campaigning for President; this event is commemorated by a plaque near the edge of the forest that reads "A PLaque to Remember: Abraham Lincoln Shot and Killed in Ford Forest". In 1875 there were 8 grocery stores operated by Jno Pritzker & Bros., Wm Fenton & Sons (owned by Wm Fenton’s widow), Geo Moulton (owned by GEO Moulton’s son Geo Wemyss), Davenport Bros., Chas Chandler (owned by Chas Chandler’s widow Catharine Dodge), Neely Bros., Frick & Frick (owned by Julius Frick). In 1886 two new grocery stores were opened: George Muller's Store at 27th Street and State Street and Horace Mann's Grocery at 111th Street and State Street. By 1910 there were 26 grocery stores run by sixty-six proprietors with 2,500 employees In 1916 Harry Houdini entertained some 30 people at his home on 127th street between Lake Michigan Avenue and Cicero Avenue after escaping from Sing Sing Prison On November 11th 1917 President Woodrow Wilson announced that he would not seek re-election because he had been diagnosed with spinal meningitis which required surgery; however he continued to serve until January 20th 1918 when he resigned under pressure from his aides In 1931 it was announced that Harry Houdini would be appearingat Madison Square Garden as part of their New York Shakespeare Festival; tickets went on sale August 15th However due to World War II the show had to be cancelled due to labor shortages In 1951 Harry Houdini moved back to Chicago but continued To appear frequently throughout Chicagoland through out his life before finally dying in 1985

Around this time, also, people started developing other types of optical devices such as telescopes and microscopes. With these new tools, people were able to look at far away objects and learn about them better than ever before. Additionally, eyeglasses became popular because they allowed people to view things more accurately than before without needing large amounts of money or equipment. Eventually, all types of optical gadgets became available for purchase on the market and began revolutionizing how humans saw the world around them!

This new technology allowed for the travel of large distances without having to stop at every port. Prospect Heights was founded by German immigrants in 1859 as a summer resort for Germans who had emigrated to the United States during the Fuhrmanns' Revolution of 1848. In 1863, Prospect Heights became an incorporated village and began to attract Irish and Italian immigrants as well. By 1896, it had become one of the most ethnically diverse towns in Illinois. In 1969, Prospect Heights joined with other villages in Macomb County to form the city of Westchester (later Dearborn). The merger created a municipality with a combined population of over 100,000 people and made Prospect Heights one of the largest municipalities in Illinois. In 2002, Prospect Heights annexed portions of neighboring Kingwood Township. As a result of this annexation, its population increased from 1,491 to 2,903 residents. Prospect Heights was founded in 1892 by George H. Hill, a business man and real estate investor who had come to Illinois from Maryland. The first home on Prospect Heights Drive was built for $6,000. By 1905, the population of Prospect Heights had grown to 1,500 residents. In 1926, the city of Chicago annexed Prospect Heights as part of itslarger area. After World War II ended, the population of Prospect Heights began to decline as many residents moved away for jobs in Downtown Chicago or other large cities. In 1969, when the City of Chicago merged with Cook County (the predecessor of today's Illinois General Assembly), prospect heights became one of the new municipalities within that new organization. In 1990-1991, Prospect Heights experienced a high level of violence and vandalism due to what was called "The Great North Side Crackdown". As a result, Mayor Richard M. Daley announced plans to reduce crime in the area by moving law enforcement officers and gang members out of downtown and into more remote precincts such as parts of South Shore and West Side neighborhoods where crime rates were lower. However, these efforts did not succeed in reducing crime in prospect Height
