Prospect Heights is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was founded by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in 1871. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Prospect Heights is located in the northwestern corner of Cook County, on the border of Winnetka and Skokie Counties. It has a total area of . The community is bordered to the north by Elmhurst, to the east by Park Ridge and Schaumburg, to the south by Westchester and Rockridge villages, and to the west by Vernon Hills. The first settler in what would become Prospect Heights was Amos Payson who arrived in 1871 from Maryland with his family. He platted what would become Prospect Heights on land he had acquired from John DeLaney for $1,000. Mr. Payson named his property "Albion" after one of his father's ancestral homes in England. Albion was later renamed "Prospect Heights." In 1878 some investors purchased 375 acres (160 hectares) of land adjacent to Albion which became known as "The Woods." This parcel became an early quarrying ground for quarries that would supply much of Chicago with stone for many construction projects such as Millenium Park and Grant Park over ensuing years. The woods were also used for hunting purposes until 1916 when they were annexed into Alger Township because Alger had more residents than either Woodland or Prospect Heights did at that time!
