The village of Prospect Heights was founded in 1892 by the merger of two small villages: Prospect Heights on the north side and Arlington Heights on the south side. The first post office in Prospect Heights opened on November 15, 1892. The Village had its own school system until 1972 when it merged with Chicago's public schools system. In 1984, Prospect Heights voted to become an official village and adopted a new government headed by a Mayor/Council form of government with five residents instead of six residents as it did before. In 2000, then-Mayor Richard Miley recommended that Prospect Heights annex what is now Little Village which would have increased its population to over 10,000 people within 5 miles (8 km). At first, Little Village resisted annexation because they felt that their community would benefit more from neighborhood planning and better transportation options than if they were annexed into Prospect Heights; however after much discussion andrew Specht convinced them to allow annexation if it meant creating better transportation options for their community as well as better access to jobs in Downtown Chicago while also increasing their property values.

After World War I Procter & Gamble acquired Hanks's company and continued expanding its operations into other agricultural products; among these were plastics (P&G developed Aquaphor), candy (Skittles), cigarettes ( Marlboro) and cereal ( Kellogg). In 1957 P&G merged with Lever Brothers to create PAULHANES CORPORATION. This marked the beginning of an era of great corporate growth for Prospect Heights as both companies brought new life to downtown with their expansions into housing developments such asamination Plaza II and Tower Place on West Randolph Street and retail space on South Water Street near Interstate 95
prospect Heights, Illinois was a census-designated place (CDP) in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population of the CDP was 9,844 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlement in what would become Prospect Heights was made on November 3, 1847 by Alexander Hirsch and his family when they arrived from Germany to settle on a farm near McCormick Place. From this point forward, Prospect Heights grew steadily as new families moved into the area. By 1870, there were over 100 people living in Prospect Heights. On October 15, 1871, Judge Augustus Kelley issued an order creating a village within Kane County for those who had fled violence and poverty in the city of Chicago following its January 12th publication of the ordinance establishing Village of West Side which limited voting rights to white residents only. The Order exempted blacks from becoming citizens because they could not hold property or vote without white consent. In 1872 Interurban Railroad Company officials decided that it would make more economic sense to build their own tracks through Kane County instead of investing in buying land from each individual farmer as had been done before. This decision led to increased development around Prospect Heights with sawmills and other businesses moving into town while homes continued to be built primarily for agricultural purposes until after World War II when housing became more scarce and prices increased accordingly
