The first settlers were farmers who arrived around 1836. By 1840, they had erected a log cabin on what is now Prospect Heights Road. In 1847, they built the first frame house in prospect Heights. In 1865, John A. Hodge donated land to make way for an agricultural college and town hall in honor of his father-in-law, Elijah Biddle Hodge Sr., one of the original pioneers in this community and a trustee of that institution from its foundation until his death in 1915. In 1905, prospect Heights became home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIC). UIC has since moved out and Prospect Heights has become an independent village within Kane County with its own police force and fire department. In 1979, United States Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan dedicated a park in honor of his wife Judith Hogue Moynihan Moynihan (1911-2000) at her request on her home property across from Prospect Heights High School; it became known as "Senator Moynihan Park". The city government renamed it after him in 1990 when he vacated office to run for president that year. In 2000s, development increased along several streets near the high school including State Street and Union Boulevard which led to increased traffic congestion on these streets during morning rush hours due to businesses moving into or expanding into new buildings along these roads; this caused problems for residents who could not get out their cars during those times because there was no way for them to avoid gridlock

On January 1, 1907, Rome Center attained city status and the name change to Prospect Heights. In 1916-17 a new subdivision called "Estate" was developed in what is now the easterly side of Prospect Heights; this subdivision served as the nucleus for much future development in the neighborhood. In 1925-26 a large housing project known as "The Cube" began to be built on Dearborn Avenue near Sheffield Road; this project would become one of Chicago's most notorious housing projects. It would house some 700 families and eventually produce more than 100% African American residents. The success of The Cube led to further development throughout downtownChicago across different neighborhoods including Prospect Heights until today when much has been replaced with high-rise buildings and parking garages within sight of each other on many blocks within Prospect Heights
