However, during World War II, Prospect Heights experienced significant growth as it became home to several military bases. In 1945, after the war ended, local officials announced that they would be closing all but two of the original businesses in town. Despite this decision, business continued to grow and by 1951 there were more than 15 businesses in town. However, when Interstate 90 was built through central Illinois in 1961-1963, it eliminated much of what made Prospect Heights so prosperous: access to resources like farmland and waterfowl hunting outside the city limits caused business to decline significantly. Today only a few legacy businesses remain in downtown Prospect Heights while most residents participate in suburban lifestyles.
