Prospect Heights is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was named for General David Dennison's Prospect Hill estate in 1786. The first post office opened in 1854 and the first store on Main Street in 1865. By 1886, when Prospect Heights had a population of 567 families, it had become an agricultural district with one sawmill and six farmhouses. In 1896, the Chicago & Northwestern Railway moved its corporate headquarters from Pullman to Prospect Heights; this helped spur development of roads and schools through what is now the central business district of Chicago. A new railroad line was built through town in 1912 and annexed by the city; this encouraged even more growth as businesses took advantage of improved transportation options. In 1930, because most residents were farmers or small merchants rather than professionals or factory workers like those who lived in downtownChicago, prospects heights became known as "the quiet city". However, during World War II many factories shifted to South Side suburbs such as Downers Grove or Elmhurst due to wartime production shortages that created high demand for housing near meatpacking plants and other industrial sites throughout Cook County. Many prospects Heights residents also left their homes during the war for work opportunities elsewhere in Cook County or abroad. As suburban housing developments sprung up along I-90s and other major thoroughfares throughout metro Chicago following World War II,[1] many prospect Heights residents decided to stay put and pursue their farming careers instead of moving away again.[2] There are still some people living primarily off agriculture today but they make up only 1 percent (out of a total population over 10 thousand) of all inhabitants.[3] Today there are more apartment complexes dotting the landscape than farms although many traditional operations remain: two grocery stores (the Community Market just east of State Street), one dry goods store (Big John's), three restaurants including two Chinese-, Indian-, and Vietnamese-owned places (one Italian restaurant has since closed), a pharmacy (Emmitt's Pharmacy),[4] two insurance companies,[5][6][7][8] four water towers,[9] several small businesses including three legal offices[10],[11], one homebuilder[12],[13][14], one real estate agent,[15],[16],[17],[18],[19],[20]; few if any have been converted into apartments but there are several high-rise buildings making use of vacant land around main streets like East 147th Street between First Avenue North and South Side Drive: One building used as an Air Force Base after being knocked down during renovation; another being rebuilt as an office tower with retail space on top accessible via escalators from main street below
