Pontiac, Illinois is located in the southern United States and was first settled by French Canadians in 1796. The town was named after the Roman city of Aquileia, which was founded by Tiberius Caesar in 27 BC. Pontiac was originally a small village on the east side of the Kankakee River, about three miles south of present-day Chicago. On July 8, 1847, it became one of the original ten townships in Cook County. In 1868, Pontiac formed its own government with a mayor and five trustees. By 1889, it had a population of 1,000 people and an annual income of $10,000. The town's first school was built in 1834 and served grades PreK to 12th grade. A log building served as the school until 1865 when a frame structure replaced it. The present-day Pontiac High School opened in 1915 and has been used since then as the community's main educational institution.
