Pontiac is a city in and the county seat of McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Pontiac is known for its classic cars, as well as its manufacturing plants that produce such vehicles as automotive engines, transmissions, and other auto parts. Pontiac was founded on February 14, 1871 by François Jarry and his wife Marie-Thérèse de Laval. The town was named after General John A. McClernand's 1st Iowa Infantry Regiment which had been organized in Pontiac eight days earlier on January 15th. The town originally consisted of only two blocks long and one block wide with a population of just 10 people. By 1872, however, the population had grown to over 100 people thanks to the influx of immigrants from Europe who were seeking opportunities in America. The first settlers in Pontiac were men who had come overland from Canada along what is now Interstate 80. These men built themselves homes near where they would live until their businesses could be established elsewhere in the community or until they could find land more suitable for farming. By 1875, there were several shops and businesses open within walking distance of each other in downtown Pontiac. In 1865 Gouverneur Morris decided to make Illinois an slave state rather than allow it to coincide with Missouri which did not have slavery but allowed fugitive slaves to remain legal fugitives if they ran away from their masters without papers or without getting help from a master or another relative living free across state lines (this practice continued into the early 21st century). As a result of this decision by Morris, many African Americans left Illinois for freedom reasons before 1870 when Pontiac became an official town site due to its location on I-80 exit 26A). Pontiac, Illinois is a small town in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. Pontiac has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s and is one of the oldest towns in Macomb County. The community was founded by General John Pemberton on October 21, 1812 as White's Ferry Landing on the River Raisin. Pontiac was incorporated as a village on January 1, 1908. It became an incorporated town on November 3 of that year. The name comes from French for "bridge over the Raisin" and refers to the many bridges over this river that crossed it at different points during its early years. The first post office in Pontiac was established on December 11, 1814. It closed on July 14, 1865 because of lack of mail service from Chicago due to Union Army operations in the area during the Civil War. The first settler in Pontiac was James Auld who arrived with his family in 1825; he sold land near what is now downtown to Start Land Company for $5 per acre (about $2 per square foot). By 1830 there were about 60 people living near where present-day downtown sits. growth slowed after World War II but resumed after passage of the Interstate Highway System and growth across Macomb County accelerated when interstate travel opened up new markets for goods and services outside of Detroit while creating more opportunities for businesses within city limits. In 2000, township officials enacted Ordinance No. 2 which restricted development along certain streets within boundaries set forth by ordinance No., making it difficult for developers to build without setting aside special permits; however this ordinance did not stop future redevelopment or increase taxes levied against property owners located near designated Transit Village areas developed pursuant toOrdinance No../ Development has continued unabated along designated Transit Village corridors providing much needed economic vitality & retail space for local residents

In 1860, Ann Lincoln married Abraham Lincoln's father-in-law John Nicolay.
