Pontiac is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 41,753 at the 2010 census. Pontiac is the second-most populous city in Chicago after Chicago Heights. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville-Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Pontiac" comes from French and means "bridge over the river Rouge". The first settlement in what would become Pontiac was called the Manor of Pontiac on June 3, 1814 by Major General David Dixon as part of a larger land purchase from Joeseph Mclntosh and other Native Americans. A post office called Pontiac was established in 1835, and remained operational until it closed in 1893. In 1847, during the American Civil War, General George Washington's army camped near present-day Pontiac for three weeks before moving on to their next campaign at Vicksburg. In 1865, following the end of World War I, Chevrolet began manufacturing automobiles there under contract from Ford Motor Company. With its expanding production facilities outside of Detroit (due to autoworkers' strike actions), Chevrolet became one of America's largest carmakers by 1922. By 1930 it employed more than 100 000 people worldwide and had sales exceeding $1 billion annually; but because of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal policies which were instituted during that decade - intended to resurrect unsound companies such as GM - Chevy lost much market share to Chrysler Automobiles throughout most of the 1930s and 1940s despite continuing heavy investment into research and development programs for new models (see below). During World War II plants were built at Flint Hills outside Wichita Falls, Texas; Decatur inside Atlanta; Dearborn Heights near Toledo; Pawtucket Plant in Rhode Island; Sayreville near Paterson NJ; Essex Junction near Chelmsford MA; Greenfield Township just east of Bridgeport CT... For a time all these plants were producing war material including tanks, planes and artillery pieces but eventually they were turned off due to shortages caused by wartime technological developments...Withdrawal finally led to plant closings throughout North America starting with Flint Hillsoutside Wichita Fallsand Dearborn Heightsoutside Atlantain 1945...All Americas final output came from BridgeportCT until its closure in 1962 Pontiac experienced significant growth beginning around 1830 when waves of immigrants started flowing into Illinois looking for a better life: many arrived via ship from Great Britain or Ireland aboard vessels sailing up Lake Michigan or downriver from Canada."
Scope mounts are devices used to attach a scope to a rifle. Scope mounts typically use either eyelets or adapters that allow the use of different-sized rings (or spacers) on different rifles. The rings and spacers must be selection-matched carefully in order to achieve the desired level of accuracy and alignment. The first scope mount was created by John Brownlee in 1876. This mount used a screwdriver as an attachment device, which allowed users to adjust the height and orientation of the scope while it was attached to the rifle. The Mounted Rifle Association (MRA) was founded in 1907, which standardized Mounted Rifle sights on all types of rifles. In 1916, Winchester introduced their own mount system using screws instead of screws, which allowed for greater flexibility when attaching scopes to rifles. However, these systems were not adopted by other manufacturers until after World War II. The history of expanding scope mounts begins with the development of Air-Cushion Mounts in the early 1920s. Pontiac is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 709 at the 2010 census. Pontiac was founded by William H. Pontiac on August 15, 1837 as the town of Pultneyville. It became a city on February 14, 1904. The first settler in Pontiac was John Cavanaugh who arrived in 1834 and named his community after himself, PS-t-o-n-i-c. In 1840, three brothers - Elijah (Elias), David and Joshua - bought land from Nicholas Flournoy for $1 per acre. They began to build cabins on the site which they called "Newfound Landing". In 1841, John Voorhis visited Pontiac and saw that it had settled well and formed a Presbyterian church with twenty members; he donated land for a cemetery which now includes the Flournoy Cemetery. On October 20 of that year, Voorhis married Lucy Parsons at New Found Landing where he had built his cabin two years earlier. On December 1st of that year, Isaac Bowen purchased 2 acres from Voorhis for $5 per acre with plans to establish a village on it but instead he developed what is now known as Bowen's Hill Village into an agricultural center with stores and homes around it which served as the nucleus of what would become Pontiac proper. In 1847 Daniel Webster bought some land south of town from Isaac Bowen for $50 per acre including buildings and laid out what is now downtown Pontiac onto this property making it possible to call Pontiac "Downtown." When Webster died in 1850 without children or heirs apparent he bequeathed his home frontage along Second Street between Third Avenue South and Fourth Avenue North to Jackson Township trustees who leased it out to local farmers until 1951 when it reverted back to its original owners through deed purchase by the City of Pontiac under eminent domain procedures exercise pursuant to Article VIII Section 5(a) of the Charter granted thereto by Act No 22_of_October_1964 . In 1861 Anthony Carpentier imported horses from Kentucky for use by General George Armstrong during The American Civil War based largely at his farm near Bloomingdale Heights outside Chicago also acquiring additional horses thereupon; Carpentious barns are still extant just north of downtown at 501 N Broadway Ave., across State Street from City Hall today . After Carbondierre's death in 1865 one horse dealer & feeder said about him "Anthony Carpentier left behind him nothing more than memories&a few bits o' furniture&an old stable" so much so that oneida farmer E M Fenton describes him as being quite "'a little forgotten'" an observation corroborated by currentArchitectural historian Dr Richard L Miller pg 97 footnote 3 within same article! A look online shows only one mention( quotation marks included) since then although several sources refer vaguely or incorrectly to this period prior even tho' nothing actually happened! On September 25th 1870 Samuel Morse completed construction on Gratiot Bridge over Fox River connecting Michigan County west of Detroit with Cook County east of Chicago becoming thereby the first railroad crossing over river westbound anywhere outside those states without waitlisted passengers being required like present day traffic exchanges such as IHOP etc.;This event marking perhaps not only introduction/promotion/establishment crosstown transportation but also massive increase in population density due primarily resultant demand resulting from Cumberland Road Great Western Railroad yard directly across street having numerous passenger coaches coming into town daily dropping off passengers opposite courthouse all while bellowing freight trains whistling their sirenongs calling attention all types &ages aficionados Train enthusiastswhistling 'Prairie Home Companion' Libby Cleary circa 2009 photo inside old building next door
Pontiac, Illinois was founded in 1847 by John C. Pontiac and his wife Jane. The town was named for the General George Washington Pontiac, who fought in the American Revolution. Pontiac became a successful fur-trade center and developed into a large agricultural community. In 1872, the Pere Marquette Railroad arrived in Pontiac and began to grow the town's population. When the railroad was sold to Chicago in 1901, Pontiac lost its importance as an agricultural center and slowly declined until it vanished from maps by 1910.
