The first interurban line ran through Pontiac on May 15th 1875 from Detroit to Chicago via Albion and Griggsboro. A new passenger depot was erected in 1883; it served as the terminus until 1925 when Amtrak took over operations. The first Automobile Company building opened in 1912; it became known as "The Motors". In 1915 Henry Ford opened his first dealership here (the only one west of Chicago). In 1923 he donated a tract of land east of downtown for use as an automotive research center called "Ford Research Station". Today that center houses several universities including Wayne State University and Michigan State University among others-making Pontiac one of the most diverse cities in America for research activity within its borders alone! In 1961 General Motors announced plans to close their Rochester Assembly Plant which had been manufacturing Buicks since 1951 and would have laid off more than 700 employees; this led to protests throughout North America against GM's decision Not all workers at that plant would lose their jobs though but instead they would be given layoff notices six weeks before their actual layoffs would happen! After much discussion between management and workers local officials passed a resolution approving job retention for those laid off after November 3rd 1961 despite protestations from some residents! Pontiac experienced many challenges during World War II due primarily to its strategic location trade route between Great Lakes region[1]and Europe[2]. Many businesses closed during the war such as Black & Decker,[3] Wernher Carburetor Co.[4], Bendix Corp.[5], American Can Incorporated,[6][7][8][9][10] Dodge Chrysler Corporation (Chrysler Division) [11], Bethlehem Steel Corporation[12],"Bendix",,"Dodge",,"Chrysler" together formed National Machine Works which produced engines for planes/trucks/boats etc... production stopped at NMW after World War II ended Despite this interruption Heavy industry did not completely leave town until early 1970s when Chrysler came back into town under new name Plymouth divisions eventually leaving again starting about 1980s even earlier due to competition from Opel
