It was formally incorporated as a town on April 14, 1865 under the name of Pontiac while still part of Cook County In 1871, fire destroyed most of what remained of Westmont and growth resumed with the incorporation of new settlements around Phelpsville including Menard Park (now Belvidere), East Stroudsburg (now Elmhurst), Algonquin (now Addison), Auburn Hills (now Aurora), Orleans Heights (now Oak Lawn) and other outlying areas On October 15, 1889, an act for organizing townships in Cook County was passed by the General Assembly and signed into law by Governor John A. Pontiac, Ill., is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,343 at the 2010 census. Pontiac is located on the south side of Chicago and it lies within the boundaries of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Pontiac" comes from a Shawnee word meaning "place where many canoes are floated." The first settler in Pontiac was John Beattie and his family who arrived in 1829. Beattie's son James built the first house in what is now Pontiac. In 1834, Samuel Armstrong settled here and established an agricultural business that would be a mainstay of local life for decades. In 1854, George Stephenson founded Illinois Central Railroad in Pontiac with a grant from President James K. Polk to transport goods between Chicago and points north. This railroad soon became one of America's most important transportation systems with its terminals at Racine and Rockford. During World War II, General Motors began production at their new manufacturing plant in Watertown, Wisconsin (now Milwaukee). This increased demand for parts led to high levels of traffic on I-95 which required temporary closures of several exits near Pontiac during this time
Pontiac, Illinois was founded in 1836 by parents of French Canadians and Irish immigrants. The town was named for General Andrew Pontiac, who fought in the American Revolution. For many years, Pontiac was a small agricultural community with few buildings other than farmsteads and churches. In 1881, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad arrived in Pontiac and began to create a large industrial area around it. This development led to increased business opportunities for the town, which became known as the "Industrial Heart of Illinois." In 1945, Pontiac's population reached 10,000 residents. By 1967, the population had decreased to 6,500 people and it has since declined slightly. Today, Pontiac is an inactive community with few businesses remaining that are not operated by local residents or official government entities such as schools or parks.
