Pontiac is a small city in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,546 at the 2010 census. Pontiac is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that became Pontiac was first settled by Indians in ancient times and named after a waterhole on the east side of the Kankakee River. The present-day town was founded in 1871 by George Pemberton and his brother-in-law, James Fenton, as a result of their ownership of land along the Kankakee River. The name Pontiac derived from French "ponte" meaning bridge or tollgate and "acia" meaning Indian village or post office. In 1881, Pemberton donated to the community two lots located just south of downtown which are now home to both shops and restaurants. Named Streets in Pontiac include Third Street (now Cass Avenue), Fourth Street (now Lake Michigan Boulevard), Fifth Avenue (now State Route 20), Sixth Avenue (now Elmhurst Road), Seventh Avenue (now Griggs Road), Eighth Avenue (now First Street), Ninth Avenue (currently Addison Road) and Tenth Avenue (currently Main Street). In 1901, local men organized what would become known as the Illinois Automobile Association which helped promote new driving techniques through rallies and exhibition events throughout Illinois. One such event took place at Arrowhead Park on April 12th where cars from all over Illinois drove into an open field for races that lasted for three days. This event also served as a demonstration for Ford's new Model T road car which entered into production soon afterward. In 1916, Pontiac hosted its first auto show with over seventy exhibitors including leading manufacturers like Cadillac, Studebaker, Lincolnshire Motor Company and DeSoto Motors Company from Chicago . This event marked one step forward for Pontiac as it began to become known statewide as an important center for automotive manufacturing. The showgrounds were renamed Constitution Square after being purchased by the city in 1924 following municipal election results showing majorities for prohibitionist candidates at every level of government across Cook County including Mayor John Pullen’s successful run for re-election on a platform opposing alcohol prohibition." Pontiac has seen many changes during its history; some that stand out are its heavy industry pastimes such as smelting lead ore down to make gasoline rods or casting iron foundries into buildings; while others more recent changes have included becoming an information technology hub with multiple businesses having been established there since 2005; while still others include widespread redevelopment taking place around it resulting in increased population density making it difficult to walk long distances without getting lost

Pontiac is located at (41°03′01″N 89°27′53″W). According to the 2010 census, its total area is 21 square miles (50 km2). Its surface area is 1 sq mi (.30 km2). As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 7,552 people living within its borders who identified as black or African American; 3% white; 98% Hispanic or Latino
