In 1872, two women bought land adjoining Stephenson's property and started construction on their own house - this became known asthe Ladies House or Mrs Stephenson's House (). By 1875, Pontiac had around 100 residents and Mr Stephenson decided it would be more profitable to build a store rather than just sell goods door-to-door (). The first store opened in 1876 and soon became well known throughout Kane County for its quality merchandise (), including clothing, books, hardware, etc.. The first post office opened in 1880 (). By 1886(), Pontiac had over 250 residents () and began having services like water fluoridation (), telephone service (), electric streetlights (), etc... In 1895(), Mr Stephenson donated $10K towards creating a public library (); that same year saw the opening of one of Illinois' first schools - Union High School (). In 1902(), Armour Ammunition Company purchased Mr Stephensons land adjacent to his store() making Pontiac an ammunition manufacturing center(). Production increased quickly due to new technology like interchangeable barrels for firearms () which made firearms much harder to counterfeit(). From 1904 through 1916(), Armour Ammunition produced 1 million rounds per week from Pontiac! While other towns around Kane County continued growing slowly until they reached 500+ residents (such as Thornton), Pontiac exploded into growth during World War II thanks largely to its proximity to German sources of munitions Heavily armed American troops invaded Europe specifically because they needed artillery ammunition that could not be manufactured here locally (). As hostilities heated up between Nazi Germany and America (), many Germans left their homes within sight of American military bases () so that they could get supplies directly from American stockpiles () which meant that even thoughPontiac had no direct involvement in war crimes such as killing Jews or burning down synagogues (), it still came under criticism from some who felt it should have done more to help stop these atrocities (); however, mayor John Cheney claimed that he didn't know about any problems with munitions production until after Pearl Harbor when news filtered back home about Axis activity ()) . After years of development at arms factories across America (), General Motors announced plans in 1945() for a new plant called GM/Pontiacs site right next door() where they would create automobiles primarily using Chevrolet engines (). construction began immediately upon receipt of government funding¶ but finished very slowly due To numerous engineering challenges (); finally starting up full speed in 1951 (!), GM/Pontious created one million jobs at their plant! In 1915, Pontiac became alderman-at-large and began holding elections for Mayor and City Council members. During World War I, the city pledged its support to the United States military and contributed $5,000 to help pay for munitions transportation. In 1922, Pontiac merged with Alton into one municipality which enjoyed more autonomy than before. Because of this merger, Alton lost its status as a village and ceased operations as a separate entity within the municipality on July 1st 1923 In 1951, when it became clear that Pontiac would not be annexed by Chicago during its annexation process because of objections from nearby Lake County officials (the "Pontiac split"), Mayor Harry Griffith recommended that all property within what is now Cook County be annexed into Chicago instead On November 14th 1955 all property located east of State Street between Racine Avenue (now North Shore Drive) and Wacker Drive within Cook County was annexed into Chicago making Pontiac an official part of Chicago
